The photos of the week: August 11-17

Posted by Tom Ryaboi / August 17, 2012

Old Bell phoneThe photos of the week collect each of the editor-selected photos of the day into one post for a contest to be decided by our readers. Sponsored by Posterjack, the photographer whose image receives the most votes will be awarded with a voucher code for a 24"x36" poster print of their work.

All the rules and fine-print can be found in the original announcement post on the blogTO Flickr page. One thing to add, however, is that the voting period ends at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, after which the winner will be contacted with the good news.

For those photographers whose images are featured below, please feel free to give us a little information about your shot — i.e. where and when it was taken — in the comments section. Who knows? Maybe your description will sway voters in your favour!

Just some background on my shot No.4 - All That Remains. This is what is left of the heritage building which used to house at various times the Diesel Playhouse, Healey's Roadhouse, Leoni's Italian Kitchen and others on Blue Jays Way across from Gretzky's. I have many fond memories of going to events there, and this is the portion being saved for integration into the Condo being built at the site. I work in the area, so have been watching the demolition, but this was the first chance i had had to actually pull my camera out of the bag and catch what's left after the demolition crews have left in advance of construction commencing.

Some info re. #3... I took this shot on a rainy morning commute as this streetcar struggled to cross Leslie at Queen. It was having mechanical problems and ended up stalled in the middle of the intersection blocking my ability to make a left. I decided to take a couple pictures while I waited, mentally wished the driver luck, and passed the streetcar with a u-turn back to Leslie. Thanks for the votes!

#7, please come and see our art on the Humber Bridge, it's there until September 27th and the lighting display is fantastic.

I voted for jer @ humber bridge because you can always get a rainbow, constructions site ttc etc. but how often does Toronto get original public street art. This art was paid for by the artist community and is what Toronto need much more of. Alos Jeremy took an awesome shot of the art. COme on Toronto this is what we should be proud of.

I took #7 Wednesday night as the artists were installing and testing the lighting system for the sculpture, I was surprised it got a photo of the day nod, and even more surprised it nearly won the photo of the week, coming within a percentage point or so, once the people involved saw it up. Obviously, this is an oft- photographed place, the Humber bridge, but I thought the angle and lighting was unusual enough (let alone the presence of the sculpture) to make this more interesting or at least a different view of a familiar place. Still getting used to the camera, a far fancier Canon 7D as opposed to the pocket Canon S100 I usually use. Thanks to those who voted for my photo, and I hope it draws some people down to see this amazing sculpture!
