The photos of the week: June 16 - 22

Posted by Tom Ryaboi / June 22, 2012

little spiderman sipsThe photos of the week collect each of the editor-selected photos of the day into one post for a contest to be decided by our readers. Sponsored by Posterjack, the photographer whose image receives the most votes will be awarded with a voucher code for a 24"x36" poster print of their work.

All the rules and fine-print can be found in the original announcement post on the blogTO Flickr page. One thing to add, however, is that the voting period ends at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, after which the winner will be contacted with the good news.

For those photographers whose images are featured below, please feel free to give us a little information about your shot — i.e. where and when it was taken — in the comments section. Who knows? Maybe your description will sway voters in your favour!

First time i've liked every single photo. Is there an option for that?

Have to give it to the first photo for capturing a kid with what appears to be a beer in his hand.

I voted for the Gardiner shot thinking it was just a very very long time-lapse, but looking further, it's apparently a Photoshop creation. I don't think Photoshopped pictures should be part of the photo of the week. This opens up an entirely different (and equally impressive) art form, but this should be about art with a camera, not a monitor and mouse.

Great photos this week. But I gotta ask about about #2. The sky must have been wiped and replaced w another shot because I have absolutely no idea how you could come up with that image.

+1 Ron. #3 - even if your photo was an amazing shot (it's OK), couldn't vote for something that depicts someone's misery - for your benefit... Unless you were in a war zone and were under the same risk as the ones you snap shots of. To me this just looks like a lucky shot of someone's car on fire, photoshopped to look tilt-shift.

#6 - you got my vote.

RE: Photoshopped images for Photo of the day... If the use of photoshop enhances certain aspects of the image then fine, but if you are, for a lack of a better term "altering reality" like in #4 where the night sky of a different location was photoshoped into the Toronto skyline then I disagree.

Ultimately its all just opinions and the only one that matters is the editors

I'm sorry, I meant #4. The one with the CN Tower and the starry sky. Not #3.

But photoshop is a different art form. There was never a photo of the mona lisa, it was a picture. So if the 'picture' was submitted would it be part of the photo of the day, even though it never necessarily came close to a camera?

I agree that photoshopped images should be acceptable; it is definitely an artform in and of itself. In these days of digital images, I think there are very few that are NOT "adjusted" in some way, shape or form.
I voted for the Gardner shot.

c'mon guys, this is 'photo of the week', not 'artwork of the week'.

nobody is saying that photoshop isn't a skill, and I'm sure every one of the above photos has gone through either PS or lightroom for adjustments of some kind. But it should still be a photo that is as close to what the photographer saw with their eyes as can be.

but photoshopping the milky way onto a photo of the Gardiner?

maybe someone should PS Tower Bridge over the eastern gap, or Rob Ford flying through the air on a winged Double-Down and we can all vote on that as well. Its about as close to reality as the Milky Way shot.

Hi, I took photo #3 (Car Fire @ Eglington)

Yes, I did use Photoshop to give it a tilt-shift effect. I felt it would really help viewers to focus on a scene that I was shooting from over 2km away.

I am not trying to "benefit from anyone's misery", I simply saw something happening and tried to capture the moment.

There was no ambulance on the scene, no indication that anyone was hurt, and if you look at my Flickr comments you'll see I clearly stated that I hope everyone was OK.

I didn't even know that blogTO had a Photo of the Week contest, but I am honoured to be chosen amongst these other great photos here.

Let me know if there are any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them for you.

very interesting re: the photoshop debate. imho i want to see pics here that have minimal processing and certainly no photoshop fx. can jim u pls tell us how he got milky way into the pic? if he used photoshop, then frankly i think his pic is completely dismissible, though gorgeous nonetheless. raw is truth.

why only this week are people mentioning the photoshop thing? BlogTO is notorious for using photoshopped images and this week they all clearly are (except maybe #7)

yes, digital images are manipulated but the best sort of processing is the stuff you can't even notice.

It's never bothered me before, but I was blown away by the Milky Way Gardener shot. I voted for it before I realized I was voting for photoshop skills and not photography ones. (Not to take away from the original image which is excellent.. but it didn't have the background). Much like Fark, maybe there can be a photoshop section which would be fun and I'm sure generate a lot of creative shots, but I think the photo of the week should be at least reasonably raw. Next week the Disneyland castle in place of Casa loma? I can certainly do that, but it wouldn't be 'real'.

Look, virtually all the photos you see in a given day have been Photoshopped/Lightroomed in some way.

The question is: What level of processing should be acceptable for these contests?

This is BS! Needs more Dan Cronin, Syncros, Ronnie Yip and Ta.

For the record, my shot (spidey) was shot on 35mm film : )
