A Toronto time-lapse a year in the making

Posted by Derek Flack / June 21, 2012

Toronto time-lapseOkay, Toronto time-lapse lovers, here's another one for the collection. We've featured a whole bunch of these visual feasts over the last couple years — including the particularly dazzling Toronto Tempo by Ryan Emond — so it'd be fair to say that big-money skyline and rooftop shots don't scare us off.

This latest effort comes courtesy of Incite Visuals' Dirk Teunissen and took a year to put together. Composed of over 12,000 images, the production values are top-notch even if the motifs are getting a bit played out. But, hey, even if you're not sold on the whole in-your-face passage of time thing (there's even a watch!), there are still a few gorgeous sequences worthy of a gander. And if you like Florence and the Machine, then all the better.

Time-lapse is so over-rated. There's no content here, only flash. No one will remember this tomorrow.

And, of course, the music was ripped off. Did the producer/director pay for the rights to use the music?! I think not. Time to contact the copyright owner.

I agree with Tim and Brenda, but less rudely. If this had been a year of unbroken timelapse, as implied, that would be something to see, but as it is, this is just a collection of timelapse shots, a few hours long at most, from various parts of the city. As such it does not break any new ground, and thus, does not deserve as much attention as is implied by the title.

Might make a nice commercial for that expensive watch.

Having lived in Argentina for some time I miss Toronto and appreciate how beautiful it is and how lucky I am to call it home.

Gotta say, and its unfortunate, but I felt this was one of the more boring time lapse videos I've watched with Toronto as the subject. Appreciate all the work - I've just seen better.

I don't think it was bad, but I just wish it had more shots of Toronto. There are so many great locations in the city. The best way to put it is like this: If I wanted to show this beautiful city to a friend overseas in order to convince him/her to move here, how would I go about doing it? How can I sell it?

That's my two cents.

P.S. I'm sure they will learn from this and possibly make a better video next time. I don't doubt their skill.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I've seen a ton of time lapses and couldn't force myself to fast forward through ONE SECOND of this..

beautifully produced, perfect music... this piece really made me stop a think about how fast time flies by and how much more I'd like to accomplish going forward into the next year ahead in this great city. Thanks for this.

My new least favourite photo technique (after mirror imaging and HDR) is the "Ken Burns" time-lapse effect. I almost feel bad for not liking this, given the time it must have taken to shoot and edit (and the expense of the music copyright) ;).

Very nice! The music was quite fitting too. I'm pretty sure I spotted this guy twice standing on the Spadina bridge with his camera...once as I was leaving for work one cold winter morning, and the other on my way back from work that same evening.

What a shame. There was no credit whatsoever for the music over this video. Someone has already contacted the copyright owner of this song.

Yes!!!!!!

The link to Ryan Emond's time lapse needs to be corrected.

Anyway, this is a very nice piece with some great scenes. That being said, I think Ryan's Toronto Tempo video was great because of the scene selection -- the Eaton Centre, St. Lawrence Market, the subway tunnels, Honest Ed's, Chinatown, etc. Everyone in Toronto would identify with those scenes.

magical piece of work. agree w sean that they should credit the music, it was a perfect match, tho i didn't recognize the artist. i especially liked the variable timelapse speeds. and i rather like the ken burns effect. very nice shots of declining and ascending stars/moon. agree w billy that at no point was i tempted to ff or bail. but they really shd have used a patek philippe watch.

Great video. Enjoyed seeing all of the places around Toronto. Makes it interesting to see both familiar and not so familiar spots. Good variation in composition and style as well, and I liked the music. Well Done!
