New website collects open letters to Mayor Ford

Posted by Derek Flack / July 22, 2011

2011722-dear-mayor-ford.jpgA new website aims to make good on Mayor Rob Ford's claim that he wants to hear from his constituents. Called Dear Mayor Ford, it aims to foster political engagement by enabling users to read and write open letters to the city's leader. It went live early this morning, and as of the time that I write this, already has 17 letters published to the site.

According to the about page, the website "has been built, and is maintained by Constituents of Toronto on behalf of all Toronto Constituents with the sole purpose of providing a unified public forum where we may post open letters to the Mayor's Office." That's a little vague, of course, but one assumes the idea is to make the project as open and democratic as possible, so why advertise a single author as creator?

Many of the letters thus far could be termed predictable — there's a lot of frustration on display — but others genuinely address the mayor and ask him to explain or account for his decisions and policies. These are the most interesting to read, but you have to surf through the lot to get to them.

Given how easy the site makes it to write a letter, it'd be beneficial to have some sort of filtering system for those that have been uploaded. Should the site get up to 100s of letters, too many good ones will get lost in the plot because readers won't have the time to sift through them all. Perhaps, then, it would make sense to sort them by topic or to implement a reader-voted ranking system to bring the most pertinent to the top of the heap.

In the absence of such a strategy, I suspect it'll be tough to engage the public in any meaningful sense. Writing a letter involves more than signing a petition. People want to know someone's going to read it — even if it's not Rob Ford.

Rob Ford has an aversion to nuance. He sees the car as the best mode of transport, so anyone who chooses otherwise is wrong, and therefore deserves no road space. He sees corporatism as the best form of government, so (peaceful) G20 protestors should be spared no amount of brutality from police.

His platform may have been most closely matched to the plurality of voters, but his views don't represent the people of Toronto.

Do you people really think i am going to read these letters. I will do what I think is best for Toronto, your opinions never mattered.

It's a good idea, and not partisan (at least in the way that it's set up), but what are they going to do with all the letters? Can they be printed and brought to city hall?

The letters should be printed and delivered to Mayor Ford's office, or Rob Ford's if Doug's out.

We've launched Toronto Ass of the Day today at http://torontoass.com and Rob Ford is our inaugural ass of the day.

Well it's broken now. For me at least; it only loads letter #40.

If you were to read BlogTO, you would assume we lived in some sort of dictatorship.

Letters, petitions, protests...all great, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to an election. It should be interesting next time 'round.

Thank-you BlogTO for your UX suggestions. The website was put together in a very short amount of time, and I would love to hear feedback from anyone on ways that we can improve the site.

As for the questions about delivering the letters to the Mayor's office, that is something that has been given some thought. Originally the idea of emailing them seemed like a good idea, but it's far too easy to delete an email.

Printing them off and delivering them really does sound like a good idea. It's pretty hard to ignore a stack of letters from your Constituents. It might even be worth while to make an event of it, see if we cannot get some supporters to come down and deliver them. It would definitely have a lot more impact.

So please, do send us emails with your thoughts and suggestions on how we can improve the site and make it easier to use. dearmayorford@gmail.com

@rek an oversight on my behalf... two people posted at the *exact* same time, and I was sorting by time. I have chanced it to sort by the post #. HA!

It would be kind of great if the good letters were actually sent to the Mayor's office. Good idea Frank!

It's still happening, now at #51. Is it supposed to load a random one, or keep climbing until it reaches the newest one?

eh.. isn't letters, petitions, protests etc the exact opposite of a dictatorship? Just because there is no election doesn't mean people shouldn't object or voice their opinions about the current leader(s).

Toronto has one of the finest library systems in the world. To reduce the hours our libraries are open or shrink the number of branches the city operates is a short-sighted way to save money.

Think big!

I know you are a "Ford," but try thinking more like a "Lincoln."

Too bad they're censoring satire, letter #57 was lolz.

Hello Parker,

Quite the contrary. There are several smart satirical posts. Take a look at #21, #29, #45, and one of my favorites #49.

The post you mention that I removed was not satirical. It was an attack on the man's health. That has nothing to do with politics.

Great idea for a site! The sheer quantity of letters written since the site launched is very encouraging—it shows that many Torontonians really do care. (And I support removing the letters that are more insulting or mean than anything else.)

As per BlogTO's suggestion, you can now vote on Letters, and I have added a 'top ten' page. You can also skip to the beginning / end, or view a random letter.

To end the BlueNight is going to mean such hardships for the people who depend on it to get to work. If our mayor were to investigate and take a ride at 5 am, the people on the bus are all workers who have no other way to getting to their jobs.

Blue night isn't going away, it's just being privatized which means it will cost more for, let's face it, people who make less. But I'm pretty sure sure that's the entire ford mantra. Take away the buying power of citizens and turn us all into individual 'customers'

Hello all. As an update from the DearMayorFord team, we will be on CBC radio Metro Morning tomorrow to discuss the site, the community support and plan of action for the letters. Please tune in!

People, those of you who support downtown agendas or think the
public should spend money on arts and culture, please take one moment
and consider history. Every great civilization of the past has fallen
from within due to certain forms of overspending on cities, their
culture and buildings therein. Every great civilization that has spanned
a continent has failed due to over-taxation of the working class and
farmers. Don’t take my word for it read some global history, I would
recommend for starters, Chris Harman, A peoples history of the world. I
know it’s nice to have opera houses, bike lanes and arts endowments but
the truth is that none of that keeps us going economically, what does
keep us going is cheap and abundant food and plenty of gainful
employment. Thanks Rob Ford for getting started with this work, I would
invite you to read the book as well, if we don’t know our history we
will most certainly repeat it, lets try to repeat the good parts only.
