Adam Giambrone Speaks at His Mayoral Campaign Launch (Video)

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / February 3, 2010

"My name is Adam Giambrone, and I'm running for mayor."

For those who weren't at Adam Giambrone's "Celebrate Toronto" party on at Revival on Monday night, video of his speech is now available online. It's split up into two parts, embedded here.

Is his platform appealing? Are his ideas any different from those that David Miller advocated for? Does he have what it takes to lead our city? What are his strengths? His weaknesses?

Today's must read: A Toronto Sun rebuttal of the wannabe Mayor. I hope he's listening:

Regardless of political leanings, hard lessions or a compassionate outlook, at 32 years old you just haven't been on planet earth long enough to know what you're doing in the role of mayor of millions of people, period.

This fact is not debatable.

Hello logic failure.

Bonkers here couldn't make a logical argument to save his life, this fact is not debatable.

See how that works?

I disagree with the notion that he's too young for the job. He's already been on council for years and currently holds one of the city's highest profile jobs. He has the necessary experience.

The truth of the matter is that he's simply not up to it. In another 10 years, he still wouldn't make a good mayor. Giambrone is long on ambition, and short on talent. How old is Miller? His failures had nothing to do with his age. Giambrone is the same age as Alex Anthopolous, the new GM of the Blue Jays, and although his age was frequently cited as a concern when he was first given the job, the early reviews of his performance have been quite positive.

There are more than enough reasons to dismiss Giambrone's candidacy without having to make his age an issue.

Did you really just use a Sue-Ann Levy article in a debate?

...you can read, right?

That Sue-Ann Levy article was pretty grim, but the comments section was even more fun. My biggest problem with dolts like Miller and Giambrone is that they make it too easy for those on the right to characterize reasonable ideas like improved transit, environmental awareness and even bike lanes as "radical socialist plots".

Is it just me or are blogTO readers quickly and quickly ruining what used to make this site interesting? I've joked before that the blog was turning into the Toronto Sun and now the first post is a Sue Ann Levy column?!?!

NO, it's the same thing over at UrbanToronto: the hecklers shout down any real debate if you don't conform to the party line of thinking.

The fact remains, that Giambrone cost businesses money by taking parking meters away from the street. This, in order for streetcars to run faster.

Seems he's working both sides of the street, being Ward Councillor and TTC Chair? Conflict of interest? Hmmmm?

Fact also remains, he didn't heed the pleas of those businesses along Dundas street. His speech rings holllow when he states 'he listens', but goes ahead with his own agenda [or the TTC's].

Age is not proportionate to wisdom.

Yeah, it won't take much to knock Giam-PHONEY out! Just the fact that he believes he can win this Mayoral race, goes to show the Strategic Management Abilitites that he has.. No wonder the TTC is in the shambles that it is..

Not that Smitherman or Pantalone are much better.. Mini-McGuinty and Mini-Miller are both as useless as they come as well..

We need a change people! Still waiting for a candidate that's not more of the same..

God, he's a dick. If we vote him in, we get what we deserve, just like we did with Miller. These candidates seem to think a tenuous affiliation with the NDP is all they need to be elected. They're probably right. In the end, however, they'll just be become officious middle-managers, obsessed with parking-ticket revenues.

According to The Star, a TTC bus driver took an unscheduled coffee break, and got nasty with a passeger. Fortunately, it's all on cellphone video at http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/760176--ttc-driver-s-coffee-break-caught-on-video?bn=1

Scottd, I don't like much of what SueAnn Levy writes. But that doesn't mean that she was wrong to take Councillor Giambrone to task for having the chutzpah to say "I will listen while I lead." Yes, you may be one of those whom he listens to. His "listening" is very inconsistent -- with him, you have a higher chance of being heard if you tend to agree with him or are part of the trendy, artsy crowd or from one of the more affluent/gentrifying areas of the ward. Just because you have had positive experiences with him, doesn't mean that everyone has. I am not the kind of person who thinks a Councillor should only do what constituents want. BUT I do think Councillors have a DUTY to engage in public consultation (especially with respect to controversial projects) AND address concerns in an open and transparent manner. The facts are that with respect to the Lansdowne reconstruction project (yeah I can see you rolling your eyes), he brushed off criticism that he consulted with claims that he conducted a "door to door survey" (a survey for which no credible evidence was really produced AND which nobody on the surveyed street seemed to be aware of). Yeah, I'm sure he'd like to forget that whole episode... but it's part of the public record. Also part of the public record is that fact that in the ensuing court case regarding the lack of consultation on Lansdowne, the City was REQUIRED to hold a community meeting with residents.

For anyone thinking that I'm making this information up about the Court case, below is a link to a story in The Star.

http://www.thestar.com/GTA/Columnist/article/547492

I suggest that people read it before insisting that Councillor Giambrone 'listens'.

Yeah, I know those supporting Councillor Giambrone are going to be working these blogs furiously trying to suggest that those who would dare to criticize this man are certifiable. But the facts are not on their side.
