Morning Brew: Exhibition Place Hotel Plans, TTC Airport Shuttle Route Confusion, Venomous Spider in Yorkville, Guns and Drugs and Kids, Meteor Spotters Wanted

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

Operators of TTC airport shuttles running from Kipling Station to Pearson recently changed their routes and nearly doubled travel time. Instead of taking the highway, they've elected to do the run on residential streets, but what's most odd about all of this is that TTC command and commissioner Giambrone weren't even aware that the change had been made.

A 26-storey 4-star boutique hotel on the grounds of Exhibition Place could finally become a reality. With economic trouble ongoing, it's not an ideal time to be building such an ambitious project, is it? And I'm not all that thrilled by the all-glass design. But most importantly, I'm wondering if there will even be enough demand for a hotel in that area to make it profitable.

$1-billion. That's $1,000-million. Or $1,000,000,000. And a scathing report from the auditor general on the eHealth program is pegging that astronomical a number as mostly wasted taxpayer money. Heads are beginning to roll, and you've gotta wonder if the entire program isn't going to get the plug pulled and be forced to start all over again from scratch.

What we don't expect to find in nestled in a bunch of grapes in the fridge: a black widow spider.

Things we shouldn't be surprised to find in one of the nation's most impoverished communities: drugs and guns, and yes... children.

Astronomers have great video footage but are skill trying to track down people who saw a meteorite rip through the Southern Ontario sky on September 25th. It likely landed somewhere near Grimsby, and I'm sure they'd like to pick up the pieces for further research.

And the infamous Dimitri the Lover appears to have finally made it onto Twitter. So far, only 15 people have decided to follow him. Ladies, if you want to know who not to date, start here. By publicly admitting to association with a deluded, sexist attention-whore, my sense is that their chances of scoring with the "sluts" are more hindered than enhanced.

In before Dimitri starts a troll-fest here masquerading as women to put himself over - something he won't be able to do on Twitter.

Re: Boutique hotel at Exhbition Place

I realize it's the marketers' language and not Jerrold's, but let's give the term "boutique hotel" a rest, especially when said hotel is 26 storeys high and has over 300 rooms.

If that qualifies as a boutique hotel, then the Queen's Quay Loblaws must be a corner shop.

Wait - let me guess - Dmitri the douchebag's twitter feed has stories of his conquests - which, of course are all completely fabricated.

I've taken the TTC's 192 Airport Rocket many times and I haven't noticed any problems while it's on the highway. The route now runs along The East Mall, then on Eglinton Ave West and finally on Renforth Dr towards the airport. It takes too long and during rush hour on Eglinton, the time is doubled.

Christ, modify a few buses to have luggage racks at the front like the ones that shuttle around the airport and go back to the old route. IDIOTS.

Running the Airport Rocket on the highway lends the tenuous credibility that barely, barely allows the TTC to call the route a "shuttle" and not leave the city completely in the 1950s. Take that away by turning the route into a local 30 min bus ride and you're living in Oklahoma City. Toronto is more or less the last large North American or European metropolitan region with rail transit not to have an airport rail link - don't make me list the dozen American cities that added one while Toronto screwed around for the last decade. Get. It. Done. And the run the buses on highway in the meantime so that we can pretend to have a "shuttle" off our anemic subway system - just like LA!

Of course they could not wait until the GO train was running to the airport...

Take the GO bus from Yorkdale or York Mills.

OMG! I've never heard of this Dimitri The Lover guy before. Has anyone else here actually visited his twitter? It has to be the most vile, offensive, sexist thing I've ever read! I'm strangely intrigued by the sociopathic morbidity of it all. He does make a good point about the H1N1 vaccine and Roman Polanski. I guess if you sift through the sexism, there are some jewels of wisdom. Thanks Jerrold

RE: Airport rocket

Wow, thanks for the heads-up, Jerrold. I was planning to take that bus tomorrow. A change of plans is in order.

What a stupid decision, presumably by some TTC lifers who've never actually thought about transit. Imagine -- deliberately slowing a key route down. That's backwater thinking that would get you fired in the real world.

yeah it sucks waiting for a bus on the east mall, you get like 5 airport rockets flying past you before an east mall bus comes by.

Airport "Rocket?" Yeah, right.

Only in Toronto would a shuttle bus to the airport take twice as long as it used to. 'Cause it doesn't take long enough to get to friggin' Pearson by transit as it does now.

Come on, a shower would do you good ... never met a feminazi that didn't need one. Dimitri The Lover's Twitter feed is awesomely douchetastic! Makes you proud to be a Torontonian. Thanks Jerrold!

The 192 routing is not permanent. It looks like it'll be reversed next week.

And say what you want about the 192, but at least it's affordable. Its included with the cost of a token. The Blue 22 train service is going to be privately operated and cost $15 to $20 each way, so be careful what you wish for.

Affordable rail service to the Airport will be available in a few years when the Eglinton LRT is built.

What? Who are these privaliged few(*streets) that will get an airport bus riding thru their streets??

What is TTC thinking? Do they want MORE people to dislike them?!

*More reason to take a taxi now i guess.

The most confusing part of this whole thing is the Airport bus is NOT adding more stops, its still running express non-stop from Kipling Station to the Airport, but for some reason it's doing it on East Mall now.

Adam Giambrone has said it will likely go back to normal next week, although its pretty surprising that he didn't know about the change in the first place, it makes you wonder who is calling the shots at the TTC.

If the TTC had deliberately intended to drive away customers, it could not have done a better job. If any Airport Rocket passengers missed or almost missed their flight because of an unexpected 20-minute delay, that would likely make them think twice about taking the TTC again (A secret plot to make the buses less crowded in future, or to drum up support for a train to the airport?) I guess "customers" is not really the right word, with this sort of anti-customer service. The TTC website now lists this "temporary route diversion" on its website - I wonder if it even did so before this story appeared in the news...

Did i miss something in this newsfeed? Now this is a "temporary" detour route?

Giambrone not knowing of these route changes also makes you wonder who's really in charge at the TTC(* Joel M said it right)
