The vehicle registration tax (on of many retarded ideas) was passed through because of him. he never listened to the vehicle owners, private and business then had this grin on the news because he felt above the law stealing from the vehicle owners. He better pay them all back real quick including other retarded taxes he's imposed in Toronto. he won't be missed even when he pays restitution to everyone.

The city and TTC, broke by him. Let's hope he leaves office now and the city gets an interim mayor to start doing a forensic financial check on where the retarded tax money went to.

You both have very short memories. Torontonians need to adopt a more generous spirit. We've become too prone to griping and complaining.

I'm so happy I have to license my indoor cat for $50/yr. Thank you David Miller!

$50. a year to tax an indoor cat? I never knew he was that low!

There should be some kind of protest day at city hall, of taxpayers wanting their money back. This has been so unfair to all of us. We can't be sheep to city hall anymore.

I'm pretty sure dog and cat licenses were required before Miller took office.

Do all these complainers not realize that residential taxes are still lower in Toronto than pretty much anywhere else in the province?

A sad, sad day for Toronto.

Miller was one of the brightest and hard-working Mayors Toronto had ever seen. We improved so much thanks to him. Think of what it would have been like of Mel Lastman continued to reign? Or what conservative catastrophes John Tory would have caused?

A truly kind, caring, smart and selfless human being.

Thank you, Mayor, for doing a great job!

I'm happy Trinity-Bellwoods wasn't turned into a garbage dump. Thanks David Miller!
(though I really suspect deputy mayor Joey Pants keeping his ward clean)

"...he felt above the law stealing from the vehicle owners. He better pay them all back real quick including other [...] taxes he's imposed in Toronto."

I can't speak for how he felt, but I can tell you what he was (and is) doing: exercising the lawful powers of the office to which he was democratically and legitimately elected. He didn't steal a cent.

You don't have to vote for him; you don't have to drink the kool-aid; you don't have the approve of his policies; you don't have to keep quiet about your views. BUT! This scorched-earth B.S. nonsense attitude according to which everything you don't like is transformed by spite, sore-loserdom and stupidity into something illegal and illegitimate has to end. It is a cancer that's slowly but surely killing civic discourse.

"The city and TTC, broke by him."

Right. New + higher taxes = more revenue = going broke? Please consider spoiling your ballet in the next municipal election.

LOL, I guess that typo means my argument is invalid? Thanks for your nuanced contribution to this debate.

His two children are soon to come into adolescence.
They've done without a father for about seven years.

They deserve their father on a full-time basis rather
than the present situation.

Miller was just as beholden to his partisan supporters (i.e., unions) as his more conservative predecessors were to theirs (e.g., business).

One can debate the extent of his legacy but he was no more or less better to Toronto as a whole. His supporters will continue to lionize him and his detractors will continue to cheer his bowing out of the next election. Although I'm among the latter I will admit he did some good things and had some good ideas. But he lost me on a number of key issues both fiscal and ideological so I'm glad he's going.

I cannot fucking wait for the cultural shift that puts an end to the sneering, destructive do-nothings who have nothing good to say about anything or anyone, and take great joy in sniping at hope and vision from the sidelines. Unfortunately, the participatory age of blogs & comments means that these venal people who used to just stay in and sneer at their TV sets now spread their bile everywhere. My kingdom for a filter that can block out their noise.

You are the one drinking kool-Aid if you think Miller was good.

Good Bye David Miller and don't come back

And I thought Lastman was bad.

@Sean: The City and TTC are broke because of Miller? Seriously? Really? Do you honestly believe that? The City has been struggling ever since amalgamation, and the TTC for far longer. Honestly. Look into it.

@Joan+@Sean: Most large cities license pets to pay for animal services. See Calgary and Winnipeg for examples.

@Brian: how does the "beholden to the Unions" claim match up with the reality of the strike?

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls but wow.
