Hidden Diary Hunt: Kensington Market

Posted by Jennifer Tse / June 1, 2009

hidden diary HuntAfter my little adventure in search of Toronto's First Post Office, I received a few requests to create a similar mission without the answers, for readers to solve. Now I have just such a mission for you!

Pictured above is a little notebook named "The Omnipresent Diary" (TOD, for short). I have left him somewhere in Kensington Market. Find him, and write something inside. Your name, a doodle, a Shakespearean sonnet... it's up to you. I'll try to include some of the responses in the next TOD post, as well as reveal the location.

You have a month before TOD moves to a new location and the next hunt begins!

Instructions

1. Begin at Wanda's Pie in the Sky.

2. You may enjoy a cookie there, if you like (I recommend the Chewy Ginger). On the wall behind the pie display case, there are two clocks side by side. Note the colour of the clock on the left.

3. Exit Wanda's. Wander south on Augusta Ave. Keep an eye out for signs that are this colour. One of these signs will have a shade of this colour in the name of the establishment it belongs to.

4. Face the establishment. Now turn around 180 degrees and walk straight, until you reach the STOP sign.

5. Facing the STOP sign, turn left.

6. There will be a friendly-looking Kensington landmark before you. In fact, you may be tempted to give it a hug...

7. As you hug it, you will see three rings: orange, red, and gold.

8. Find TOD on the gold ring.

Have fun! Try not to spoil things for anyone should you leave a comment on this post, and please don't tamper with TOD once you find him.

why do writers of this blog keep promoting Pie in the Sky.. it is a terrible cafe and the food there is terrible and overpriced.. do they pay blogto a promotion fee?

Great idea, Jennifer! For the next scavenger hunt, I'd like to see the clues take us to locations and landmarks we normally wouldn't come across - (ie. Toronto's First Post Office.) Food for thought! :)

Thanks Elle! Yes, that's the aim of this series--each hunt will hopefully have the participant coming across something new or noticing something they wouldn't otherwise. I thought this Kensington landmark would be something most people wouldn't know too much about, unless they lived in the area. All will be revealed next time! ;) Good luck finding TOD.

@jack Actually I just happened to be there while cooking up ideas for this hunt. I got hungry!

What will happen to TOD when it rains?

Nope. They don't. I don't think there's a pattern of us promoting it excessively. It's a well known place and a lot of people like it. Enough that it was voted to have the best cookies in Toronto.

TOD has a plastic cover that will ideally protect him from the worst of the elements, but if that doesn't work I'll have to go back and put a clear plastic bag over him or something.

Love this idea, Jennifer. Kind of a big ole public circle journey journal! Looking forward to finding it and contributing, and even more looking forward to MORE!

So I went to check on TOD today and unfortunately, someone who REALLY needs a hobby thought it would be funny to make off with him!

If you've very recently completed this mission only to find an empty red bike lock (they took the pen, too), now you know why.

I'll try to replace the notebook the next chance I get, but I can't promise that it'll look the same as in the picture...except for the friendly face, of course.

Sorry about this! I guess there's nothing I can do to prevent incidents like this in the future, since it is a public art project, of sorts. Some people did end up finding TOD and writing something inside before he was stolen, so I want to keep this going for as long as possible.

UPDATE: TOD has been replaced. Yay! Go find him!

UPDATE 2: TOD has been stolen again. I'd locked him up so that someone would have to really tear him apart to remove him the second time around. Much to my surprise, someone actually did. Who knew that someone would go to all that trouble to spoil this project?

Not cool. I mean, really. It's just a notebook.

All I can do is keep replacing TOD and hope for the best. If anybody notices TOD missing again, please fire me a message at jennifer at blogto dot com and I'll get on replacing him right away.

Apologies if I've sent anybody on a wild goose chase this month. I want this to work as much as anybody!
