Zellers' Cure for Toronto's Bed Bugs

Posted by Tim / November 1, 2008

Bed Bugs TorontoIt's not news that many Toronto homes and apartments have a bed bug infestation. Howard Moscoe appealed for them to be designated a health hazard and fingers have been pointed at Toronto Community Housing to clean up their act.

(Hey - but at least we're not Vancouver)

But finally after years of neglect, denial and hoping that the problem would just go away we have a savior - and it's Zellers. One of their stores recently dedicated an entire display to insecticide (the aptly named Super Kill 2) that will obliterate the persistent creatures.

Thanks for the tip and photos from the East York Tenants Group.

Doesn't Toronto anti-pesticide by-law outlaw the killing of such poor defensive creatures?

Kidding, I think you can still use them. But not on plants.

Nothing kills bed bugs other then a professional.

The problem is huge, anyone can get them, and they are incredibly evil little bugs.

I had them, got rid of them. I didn't use any pesticides. I did throw out my old bed.

All it took for me was a good clean of my bedroom and keeping stuff off the floor by the walls. Even if they are still alive in the wall/under the baseboards they will die eventually.

Lesson learned: Taking a box spring found in your hallway is a bad idea.

many little things can live in a mattress.

I learned recently that a building that houses a well-known concert venue on Sherbourne is crawling with these little buggers.

I don't think I'll be using the cloakroom there.

I picked them up after buying an upholstered headboad at a very popular Toronto store that's known for it's pretty, "shabby chic" furnishings (featured in many mags). Luckily I discovered them that very night and had the house treated within a couple of days (store owner picked up the cost). The store opened a second location soon afterwards. I just hope the owner took precautions to avoid spreading the bugs to other unsuspecting customers!

I've read about bug proof bed covers made of fabric so tightly woven that bugs can't get through it. Sounds great, but does anyone know where to buy them in Toronto.

Also, I read that there are several "bug proof" covers on the market that haven't been lab tested, so if you do see them for sale, make sure to take note of the brand so we can do some research.

Thanks!

You can buy Protect-a-Bed "Allerzip" through their online store here: http://64.34.172.75/~protect/main.php or follow their links to a local retailer. This particular brand and model outshone its competitors in bed bug tests, in particular because the bugs are unable to breach the patented zipper, even if it has become a bit undone. They're pricey, so you can get a cheaper brand and duct tape the zipper shut, as they can squeeze between the teeth. For more info on the bed bug tests you can read here: http://bedbugger.com/encasements/ "bedbugger" is a really great place to find tons of info about bed bugs, run by a really well informed person out of NYC, I think.

In order to get rid of bed bugs you must treat your laundry too!!!

Have a professional service do this - they have the products and procedures to do it right. If you use an exterminator and don't treat your laundry then you will probably see them in your house again soon.

Check out Bugs 'R' Gone Laundry in Toronto. Their phone number is 1-866-698-3653 and their website is www.bugsrgonelaundry.com

That's where you have been somehow misinformed. Do more research on it you will quickly find that "rubbing alcohol" sprayed on them kills the hatched ones instantly. Also deep penetrating steam also kills them, suck as your steam cleaner for fabrics. While these are less costly ways to rid them there is also the more expensive professional way and believe it or not the pros will cook the little peskys to with heavy doses of steam. If possible refer to the link here and you can see some for yourself.

Suffering with bed bugs?

Call a professional!

It's all they do - helped me more than I can say.

Also, in response to 'Wendy', be careful if you're going to spray rubbing alcohol - doing that can be very dangerous. I researched this subject for countless hours and the conclusion is that DIY'ers have their heart in the right place but when it comes to bed bugs, only a pro has access to the chemicals that can really give you a fighting chance at success.
