Morning Brew: November 17th, 2008

What's happening in the GTA (and a POLL!):

Either you knew about it and avoided it like the plague, or you raced over early to be sure you and your crew got a front row vantage point. The 104th annual Santa Claus parade (the largest of its kind in the world) brought smiles to the faces of kids and Christmas enthusiasts and brought a patience test to drivers trying to get to their destinations.

The money is in the bank, and ready to be used to hire a selection of international hot shot architects, whose jobs will be to make the new subway stations on the forthcoming Spadina extension pleasant to use. Bringing light and fresh air underground are a priority for Will Alsop (of Dalmatian-spotted-tissue-box-on-pencil-stilts fame).

iPods are the new Nikes - at least when it comes to what's commonly getting Torontonians rolled on the streets. Since late October, 9 people in the city have reported being robbed of their iPods, including one mugging victim who was beaten with a meat tenderizer.

School uniforms add to the collective spirit of students and contribute to an inherent sense of belonging... but they also allow teachers and police to quickly identify those who belong and those who don't. One school trustee wants to make getting the required 80% of parents approval easier, with security in mind.

And David Miller's performance as the Mayor of Toronto has been put under the spotlight. Do you think he's done a great/good/fair/poor/terrible job during his term?

"You can take my iPod but at least let me back up my songs!"

I've often considered a scripted response to being mugged for my camera gear, and it definitely includes a concise plea to the robber to allow me to retain my memory card.

People get jacked for their ipods still? Is this 2001 again or something? Easiest thing you can do to cut down your chances of getting mugged for an ipod is to dump the white headphones.

Or buy a Nano. No one wants that.

@Jerrold: Heh - I've often pondered the same thing. I always keep my camera strapped to my hand/wrist on the street - figure a D80 upside the head will give me enough time to start running ;)

Count me in the 'at least let me keep the memory card!' crew. I can't count the number of times this has run through my head while walking around at night with an 8GB SD card full of video on it.

I remember jokes when the iPod came out that the headphones were "Mug Me White" in color...

I was recently robbed of everything from my house, including my macbook. I saw the guy with my stuff, and every day a bit of me wants to cry inside that I didn't just offer him 50 bucks for my computer back.

Much better than shelling out another 2,000 bucks.

Oh, and the cops took 3 hours to come, even with us calling and telling them we had him in our sights. Love you too toronto.

Sucks Breanna. You should've meted out some street justice on the wanker.

iPods... i'd have thought the kids at UofT would get mugged more for their Macs.

The other day I saw someone using their macbook AS their ipod. They had their headphones plugged into it and they were walking with it, gripped in one hand (closed of course). I could hear the music as they passed.

Gee you now see there are some drawback for the user of an ipod? No removable memory card, no removable battery. Apple is smart, you MUST repurchase when it dies, when you need more memory. The product is constantly evolving wouldn't it be cheaper if it didn't have the memory card sealed inside it? YES

@Daniel

I don't see how downloading a movie online justifies being beaten to death. Or maybe the recent increase in iPod theft is an orchestrated project by the RIAA?

@Badbhoy

It doesn't justify it at all, but don't complain when your stolen shit is stolen.

Two wrongs don't make a right. BUT you're either on the right side of the law and the lord or you're on the wrong side.

Downloading movies and music illegally is a gateway crime, start there like its no big deal cause you can do it without harm. But take a taste of your own bitter medicine

@ Daniel

To you, iPod = stolen digital media????

I own one and pay for everything I download. So do a lot of other people. Please don't paint everyone with the same brush... it's far too presumptuous an accusation.

OK sorry. Note taken.

Two of the biggest most popular brands are also the most popular items to steal. Thats really not a surprise, cars have been broken into, car stereo's, home stereo's, CD's, cassettes, doc martens, music and footwear the coolest things to have and the coolest things to have. This isn't really anything new BUT the violence behind it is disgusting and is why its getting the media coverage.

I was jumped once on Yonge Street by three young thugs. I had a gun pulled on me, and took a few punches to the face with a diamond ring which spilt my eyelid and left some other scars. All I was doing was walking home after a night out. I had a few drinks and was probably an easy target. BUT it did two things:

1. Made me angry and was surprised that I wanted to get them back, but it created more anger and negative energy, I didn't do anything about it but I felt I was turning one of them for a few days.

2. Made me realize this city isn't as safe as we think and feel it is.This stuff goes on everynight in the city, we only are shocked and hear about when it happens to someone in your own circle and it hits close to home OR when there is a spree of this activity by one group like just happened. Otherwise it goes on everywhere, but a couple of punches and kicks to the head and having your wallet stolen doesn't make the news.

Your experience is unfortunate. Especially since it also made you bitter enough to wish ill will on others.
