Gerard Kennedy Elected in Parkdale-High Park

Gerrard Kennedy ElectedGerard Kennedy bested incumbent Peggy Nash in the Parkdale-High Park riding, turning one of Toronto's - and the country's - most hotly contested ridings from orange to red. With almost all polls reporting, Kennedy enjoys a nearly 3,000 vote (8 point) lead over Nash, which is actually not as close as I expected.

Many riding residents headed into their polling place still unsure how they would vote, and it appears the now all-but-confirmed reality of another Harper government weighed heavily on voter's minds.

It's kind of disappointing that Parkdale-High Park was likely decided based on party leadership and not the candidates, as both Kennedy and Nash offer great things to the community. The real shame is that only one of the candidates can go to Ottawa.

The NDP will feel the sting of this loss. There's no doubt that Peggy Nash has been considered one of the stars of the 2006 MP freshman class and to lose a seat in the heart of Toronto is a big blow - especially in light of the strong campaign run by Jack Layton and the NDP.

But Gerard Kennedy's combination of a long track record in the neighbourhood and the sentiment that a vote for the Liberals was a vote against Harper and the Conservatives was enough to catapult Kennedy right into Ottawa.

It's safe to say that we can look for Kennedy in a plumb position if Stephane Dion retains the leadership. Kennedy's fit within the Liberal party will be less clear if Dion steps down from the leadership as there are still memories of the 2006 leadership election.

Gerard Kennedy and his policies are sexy. Way to go!

Congratulations to him. I genuinely think this election would have gone better for the Liberals if Gerrard had won that leadership campaign.

I just hope we (living in Parkdale-Highpark) won't not hear from Gerrard again until the next election.

Kudos to Kennedy! Give him credit. He won this race because of his strength, not a Party vote. He conducted a classy campaign from start to finish. He will be prominent in the Party no matter who the Leader is.

Was there any really doubt?

He definitely won the race based on his life in Parkdale, versus the Party Vote. If it was anyone but Kennedy, the NDP would probably taken the vote.

Cut those votes, hipsters. Just because Parkdale isn't a Conservative hot spot doesn't mean you need to go and cut people's brakes.

So how about a Future Prime Minister from the Parkdale riding? Sounds good.

Gerald! Gerald! Jerry!

How's his French. Can be PM?

Saaweet. Glad this guy won. He was great as the education minister. He'll be better as the Liberal party leader.

Oooooh. Michael Coren won't like that.

Kennedy is his MP and Kennedy is a \
Liberal--big time.

Kennedy has no national profile and the failure of Dion is his failure because he put Dion in the leader's seat. He's young, he'll get another chance.

I voted for Kennedy because he is a Liberal, not because of his personal track record. A vote for the Liberals, is a vote against Harper.

I was really gunning for him to win the Liberal leadership, and frankly, I am still holding a grudge that it was his withdrawal and subsequent backing of Dion that has put the party in the position of being unable to oust the Conservatives from power.

Nash is a respected MP and certainly didn't do anything over the past couple of years to deserve losing her seat. Kennedy won because of the party he represents. People were voting strategically in order to prevent a Harper majority. He shouldn't have benefited from that, because it's his fault that Stephan Dion is the Liberal PM, which is the main reason the Conservatives were flirting with a majority anyway. I'm disappointed in my riding.

Typo above: "It's his fault that Dion is the Liberal leader"

@J-rock: Kennedy has a long history in this area, and I don't know if his win was necessarily because of a strategic vote. I think a lot of people voted on this guy's record and compared it to Nash. But I understand why people would be miffed because he helped put Dion on the Liberal throne.

Whatever, I'm just waiting for Trudeaumania II. He's dreamy!

Posted by: sippy at October 15, 2008 11:28 AM

I'm miffed because Nash is a great MP.

I don't understand how the Liberals were able to push the idea that a vote for any other party was a vote for Harper. It's been clear from day one that the Libs had no chance of forming a government. Any seat that doesn't have a big C on it is an opposition seat. It's not like the Liberals are a formidable opposition in parliament these days anyway.

Nash is a respected MP and certainly didn't do anything over the past couple of years to deserve losing her seat. That's true. Good point.
Kennedy won because of the party he represents. No, not necessarily. Do you know what Gerard Kennedy has done for Parkdale? Or are you a hipster that moved in? Kennedy has his political roots in Parkdale, so this comes as no surprise. In fact, the Liberals held the seat before the previous election, where the NDP and Nash narrowly beat out Bulte. So you could say the Reds are taking back their seat in an unnecessary election. And if you think it was to spite the NDP, check out the Provincials. NDP. Gerard Kennedy won because he is Gerard Kennedy. This has more to do with him than it does the party or any agenda bullshit that you people make up.

People were voting strategically in order to prevent a Harper majority. lol
How is this riding even going to affect a Conservative majority when Conservatives don't even exist in this riding? According to voting history at least.

I'm disappointed in my riding. Then you wouldn't call it your riding. Please don't cut any more brake lines.

I personally am satisfied in my riding. How would it feel to have a futures Prime Minister from your riding? It would feel impressive I would say.

JRoc, While I didn't grow up in the riding (did you?), I am very aware of Kennedy's connection to the area. And not that it matters, but I am most certainly not a "hipster that moved in". I think you have forgotten to take into account the "High Park" part of the riding - hardly a hotbed of hipsterdom. Furthermore, to insinuate that I was involved in any of the vandalism that plagued this campaign is as stupid as it is insulting.

We (notice I said "we", as it is very much my riding as well) turfed a potential star MP, who was almost universally acknowledged as doing a great job, in favour of the guy who made Dion the Liberal leader and created the very real possibility of a Harper majority.

And FYI, while they don't usually do very well, the Conservatives do exist in the riding, and while the candidate finished well behind this time around, they have managed to win it once before.

Gerard has no chance at the leadership. He knee-capped the party by engineering Dion's leadership win, they're in absolute disarray and will be for the next few years. I imagine there's plenty of enmity for him in the party.

What a damn, damn shame this is.

The MAIN reason last night turned out like it did is Mr. Kennedy, and he gets rewarded? A senior minister in a government that lied to get into power, and he wins against the first Member of Parliament in a generation to give a damn about Parkdale-High Park.

Is it any wonder this city a)gets treated like crap, and b)we deserve the people we elect.

Honest to God, this is disgusting.

Are you all insane? This guy gave the teachers a huge pay increase the last time he was the education minister. Even the teachers union couldn't believe how fast this guy rolled over.

I stumbled on this website and saw these posts. I am happy with the results of this election for this riding. Twice I wrote to Peggy about my concerns about bill C60 and bill C51 and I didn't receive a response. While I know she may be busy, may not directly be involved in the process of passing these bills I expect at least a form letter. My mind was made up when I wrote to Gerrard once and he responded. He's wasn't even the MP. My mind was made up then. Did anyone watch the Liberal Leadership on television or in person? He isn't the entire reason for Dion becoming party leader and everyone blaming him is looking for a scapegoat, he didn't want to support Ignatieff so he decided to move behind Dion. What if that was principal, a lot of people didn't want to support Ignatieff either. That was the Liberal party's fault. Not his.

Kennedy would bring integrity, intelligence, charisma and energy to a leadership race. I am glad, but not surprised to see him elected. THe whole country will benefit from his experience, vision, and passion. I hope he does run for the leadership.

I have to disagree with the article. I do not feel that Nash was adequate. I suppose that the writer actually never had to deal with power-hungry Nash, but I did. Nash, and her staff (which kept changing like there is no tomorrow) behaved in non-helpful and belligerent manner. None of those 'we are for the people thing'. Nash felt she is important and she has to be in Ottawa, etc, etc. I guess she forgot who and why she was voted in. She will be quickly forgotten and I certainly wish none of you has misfortune to deal with her.
