Terrorist Training Camp in Southern Ontario - Video Released

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / September 19, 2008

Were it not for the real 9mm being fired and the Takbir chanting, would this make the cut as a bona fide terrorist training camp video?

Paintball guns, wrestling in the snow, and doing donuts in the parking lot of a Canadian Tire are something that most teenage boys aspire to do in the middle of January, but in this case it may represent a key piece of evidence in the Toronto 18 trials (which is now down to 11).

I must say, it feels rather unsettling to think that the entire world is seeing Toronto as a terrorism-spawning city today.

How, if at all, does the release of this video affect your opinions on the Toronto terror trials?

Wow this whole trial smells funny.
first off that video looks like my visit to the cottage!
Secondly; the key witness in the crowns case had to spend time in rehab "drying out" before finishing with his operations.

First off, Takbir chanting does not make you a terrorist. It's chanting that's part of Islam, much like Aum chanting is to Buddhism.

But, what the fuck were these guys thinking??? It's as if they are asking to be put away. When I look at this, I can't help think that they deserve to be targeted and made an example of because they were stupid enough to dress up in camouflage and carrying around guns in the woods. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

hmmm...having a CSIS informant as the ring leader makes for an obvious setup.

I've done scarier things playing paintball. no one there looked like they knew what they were doing.

@ Suzanna

<i>"First off, Takbir chanting does not make you a terrorist..."</i>

No it certainly doesn't. But when it's done by people wearing camouflage, doing exercises, and yeilding guns it takes on different meaning, doesn't it?

I can't help but think that this is a real Canadian Bacon moment. Does anyone else see it? I mean really, it's almost ridiculous.

Canadian Terrorist: "Eh! I'm gonna take you down!, tackle you in the snow eh..."

Random person: "Hey don't do that! that's not very polite! I was offended"

Canadian Terrorist: "NO! I must terrorize you!"

Random person: "But, I'm not afraid of you, you don't terrorize me, in fact I'm just a little peeved you shot your paintball gun near me. I'm trying to relax in my cottage eh and just drink some Rye and maybe have a little toke eh? Why are you all up in arms? Just apologize man, come have a drink, let's talk this out eh?"

Canadian Terrorist: "yeah you're right, i'm soory."

Just because they were incompetant doesn't mean they weren't serious. Many criminals who are charged with 'attempted' crimes failed because they were idiots - should they be let go?

@apetimberlake - this is totally a weekend cottage trip! I mean, not to make light of terrorism, but who wouldn't enjoy a good paintball-armed game of capture the flag up north?

yes they should be let go. We don't run around locking up every two-bit albertan with a shotgun fetish. locking these people up mean that we a) take these people seriously, which i certainly do not and b) that we're afraid of people who do not agree with us. we're not americans, we do not have to be xenophobic.

I have to agree with Davedavedave up above... (Does that make Davedavedavedave???)

You only have to read headlines at Fark.com or The Smoking Gun to know that criminals are often short a few brain cells - which makes them no less dangerous... more so sometimes.

I'm also with Jerrold, the context does change in how they are using a religious chant - they may not be the "terrible" mujahideen on a jihad from Allah, but they are religious whackjobs that may need to be dealt with (sorta like how the U.S. might handle Christian fundamentalist/NRA supporting/Militia Men ... wait... i mean... if they weren't Republican party members. Ok I got it, Christian fundamentalist/NRA supporting/Militia Men/who want socialized health care. There, much better.)

The courts are doing a good job handling this. It is coming to light that these are not the terrorists we are looking for.

These guys didn't likely have the intelligence to pull off such an opperation as they had planned. This also means they didn't have the intelligence to realize they didn't have the ability to succeed, which does make them -very- dangerous people indeed.

While they might not have succeeded in their full, grandiose plan, I think even the stupidist of people could have still caused at least -some- damage to property and people.

The world most certainly <a href="http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&;q=toronto+terrorist+video&btnG=Google+Search&meta=">IS watching</a> (200,000+ results for "toronto terrorism video").

This was posted here to understand and give voice to the reaction of Torontonians, not to be a deeply researched political piece.

Thanks, once again, for bringing your personal vendetta into the comments, Zack. You're a real winner, and you expose yourself as one every time.

Zack you're a d-bag in need of a Friday audience.

"Jewrrold"? that's silly. what's also silly is coming on BlogTO to decry how stupid BlogTO is. that's a walking bag of contradiction and irony. don't click on to the site if you hate it so much.

I'm not even Jewish.

But the fact that you felt the need to bring an ethnic stab into the fray is really deplorable.

Take a look at the clowns who released this video - the "Nine/Eleven Finding Answers Foundation". My God.

They're a right-wing U.S. group dedicated to stirring up public sentiment against Muslims. It's pretty obvious that their motive for releasing this video is to embarrass Canada into finding these guys guilty regardless of whether they really are.

The real question is who in CSIS leaked the video to them?

<i>"The Nine-Eleven Finding Answers Foundation reportedly obtained the video from a British court after it was shown at the trial of a man - who had contact with the Toronto men - convicted of being a terrorist propagandist."</i>

Was the "Jewrrold" comment really that offensive? I mean, Zack does seem to give off douche-bag vibes, but I kinda laughed at that. Sort of like Cartman on South Park.

I'm half-Jewish (don't really understand why it's viewed as an ethnic group) so I guess it's ok for me to laugh. Could also be the Catholic half causing me grief...

I'm so conflicted...

Anyways, back to the trial!

@Paul: I'm not sure this can really be called terrorism, per se... I mean... Sure they may have had plans to kill, destroy, etc. But they really aren't that organized, and I wonder if they were being egged on (their "leader" was the informant). Again, this trial is going to be informative.

Yes, it is offensive.

It's like me calling you Davefrican or Islamadave. Combine that with Zack's repeated attacks on me, and malicious tone and it's really offensive.

Ok... Ok... I just took it as a hilariously ridiculous insult. Like as if he said "Why don't you go back to San Francisco!" out of the blue.

Unfortunately, my first name doesn't quite fit any slurs... My second name however, "Jewnathon". Heh... I'm so lame...

Zack, your accusations are so obviously and completely ridiculous and baseless - so much so that I won't waste my time writing up a response.

@Zack

I'd much rather communicate this to you directly, but since you hide your identity and provide a false email address with your comments, I have no choice but to post it here.

If a judge or jury were to find that your statements here are libel, Bell (the ISP your workplace uses) would be approached with a court order, and eventually you'd be issued a subpoena.

You've been harrassing me for months now, Zack, and on numerous occasions you've made libellous remarks, which I've kept a record of.

There's only so much I'm willing to take you smearing my name, Zack.

Please stop.

It's no news that a lot of good Canadian citizens of one certain fraction in "religion of peace" are terrorists to be. Something tells me that Khadr is not alone.

Zack,

Journalistic innaccuracy is not a punishable offence. I don't have to provide evidence that Toronto is manufacturing terrorists. I expressed my opinion, that to think that others are viewing Toronto in a terror-breeding city is unsettling. There's nothing here to bring before the courts.

On the other hand, making libellous comments directed at a specific individual in writing on the internet is a punishable offence. You've made numerous false statements about me so many times that I feel that my reputation is being unjustly harmed by it. This isn't an idle threat. I will contact a lawyer if you continue to make false, defamatory statements about me.

This is exactly the sort of posts you were looking for Jerrold. Good job by maintaining the integrity of Toronto as a multicultural and tolerant city. Good Job.

As far as your threats are concerned, well, in the words of my friends right here, go screw yourself you little turd.
