Toronto Cyclists Union's Big Adventure

Posted by Roger Cullman / May 29, 2008

"I wouldn't sell my bike for all the money in the world. Not for a hundred million, trillion, billion dollars!" -- Pee-Wee Herman, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, 1985.

Join Pee-Wee tonight at The Bloor Cinema for a fundraiser screening in support of the new Toronto Cyclists Union, a membership-based organization formed by Dave Meslin that provides a unified voice for Toronto cyclists.

The screening of the Tim Burton classic will be supported by a live cast of locals (à la Rocky Horror Picture Show) including Sook-Yin Lee, Lex Vaughn and Gentelman Reg. Other participants will include members of The Hidden Cameras, Broken Social Scene, Apostle of Hustle and Kids on TV.

A second show has been added, so there's a 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. screening. Admission is $14 for an evening of fun and entertainment. The audience is encouraged to join in, so brush up on your movie quotes and come out to support cycling in Toronto.

Considering that he was arrested for masturbating in a theater and then arrested again for possession of child pornography, I really have to command the judgment of Cyclist union for having him in a fundraiser.

But then what do I know, I'm a just a pest. ;)

Peace,

Re-watched the movie recently as I couldn't make this evening. It is a comedy classic that has aged really well... folks this evening are in for a treat.

@Zack: Paul Reubens' first arrest was in 1991 where police charged him for indecent exposure in an adult theatre. The child pornography charges, stemming from a 2001 police raid on his house were eventually dropped, as it turned out that his confiscated collection of vintage erotica was all legal at the time of original publication. The charges were reduced to "obscenity."

Dateline NBC <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4653913/"; target="_blank">reported in an exclusive interview</a>:

"One thing I want to make very, very clear, I don't want anyone for one second to think that I am titillated by images of children. It's not me. You can say lots of things about me. And you might. The public may think I'm weird. They may think I'm crazy or anything that anyone wants to think about me. That's all fine. As long as one of the things you're not thinking about me is that I'm a pedophile. Because that's not true."

Then again, the fundraiser isn't about Paul Reubens, it's about bicycles, which play a large role in the movie that happens to star Pee-Wee Herman.

That's why I'm going to the first show, I hate when the floors are sticky from the previous audience masturbationings.

Will the Cyclist's union ever go on strike and refuse to cycle?

saw it tonight at the 7pm show -- it was GREAT!!! The theatre was packed (good thing we lined up early, there were five of us) and could have been full. It was awesome, lots of laughs from the movie as well as a great and imaginative way of recreating the film live in front of an audience.
