TTC Announces Metropass Refund Policy

Posted by Tim / April 30, 2008

TTC MetropassThe TTC announced their refund policy today for holders of an April Metropass. The policy, needed after the weekend's impromptu strike, calls for refunds to be issued starting May 5th. Those who have a regular April Adult Metropass will receive $7.50. For other types, check the refund amounts here.

At $7.50, the TTC is refunding the cash equivalent of about three rides. This may seem like a fair amount as it's roughly equivalent to the expected use on a typical half weekend. But, for the legions who were stranded at the wee hours of Saturday morning I suspect this won't come close to covering what they had to pony up for the emergency cab fare.

Couldn't they just somehow reduce the price of the May passes? The process they have set up seems a bit inconvenient.

Like mail in rebates, I'm sure many people won't take advantage of this

It seems like this way, it guarantees that everyone who wants a refund can get one, relatively easily. All you have to do is take it to a collector's booth. That's not too difficult. A signature and a couple photocopies and you've got yourself a document for tax receipt purposes, if you need it. Many people (ex. university and college students) might not be planning to buy a May metropass as the spring term is done. This way, they can still get a refund.

What happens if you wanna declare the pass on your taxes, do you get a receipt for the pass you've since given up? Photocopies don't mean shit, otherwise I'd have piggy backed my wife's passes from last year.

Wouldn't CCRA notice that you both submitted passes with the same identifying number?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm going to Disneyland!!!

Thanks TTC. A cab from Islington and Bloor to Pape and Danforth is a LITTLE more than $7.50, but thanks.

@Ry Tron: normally for income tax purposes, you only need the actual pass if you get audited. Under normal circumstances, you don't even need to send in copies.

My understanding of the press release Tim linked to is that the CRA has agreed that, for April, photocopies of the pass will be accepted even in the case of an audit.

why can't they atleast give a refund of a day pass?!

I guess we could get a printout of the press release as well and keep it just in case. If needed, it shows that photocopies are allowed in this case.
I've done it when I travel to remind guards that knitting needles are allowed on airplanes. I've never needed it, though, but I have it just in case.

The refund of a day pass would be useless to monthly metropass buyers. A discounted metropass the next month would be useless to those who sporadically buy passes.

The cash refund is the best way to go, IMO. It ensures nobody is left out.

Its inconvenient that you have to 1900 Yonge St. and take a photocopy. If you subscribe (by mail) to the metropass they should include a cheque next time.
