Sam the Record Man
Grey skies over Sam the Record Man on Yonge Street.

As Sam's counts down its final days, the debate goes on about what, if anything, should be done with the legendary neons.

On blogTO the records will always spin... just scroll up and down with your mouse and the interlacing on your screen will do the rest.

Good riddance!! Hopefully the demise of this store will spark major improvements along Yonge.

Yonge has such beautiful architecture, but you can't see it because these tacky, gaudy signs cover the buildings all along Yonge and the owners of all those cheap discount shops don't care about renovating them.

We need to be talking about renovating the buildings and improving the streetscape on Yonge, not about saving tacky advertising signs!

Yes, who cares. I can't wait for all of these tacky stores to go...which hopefully will be soon.

I couldn't care less about the sign.

While, yeah, the tacky signage gone might be a good thing, one can easily take a look at the new facade next door at Future Shop to see an example of where renovating and modernizing did nothing for the look of the area.

Ideally, restoration would be wonderful and I would absolutely love to see a well-restored building on that corner... but that uber ugly grey stucco is a good indication of what the new owner of Sam's building could do - especially if the brickwork under the signs is in bad shape. I'd pick the neon records over that any day.
