Capture the Hog: Underpass in Colour

Posted by Tanja / June 17, 2007

Capture the Hog - Mural in progress at Queen West & Dufferin
Underbelly of the CN bridge at Queen West & Dufferin -- getting an artful facelift.

This underpass has always been interesting for its crackling paint, big acoustics, mysterious fenced stairwells and "Queen St Subway" engraving by the top ledge. Now, the white walls are getting a colourful makeover.

More photos to come when the mural is complete!

What's the history behind the "Queen St Subway" sign? Was there suppose to be a line that ran to the area but never got built? Or is there a line that runs up there but isn't used anymore?

It's technically a subway, as it's a passageway that goes under something.

Lots of pedestrian underpasses in Japan have 'subway' signs.

Much is explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Street_subway

jordan is right. If you do a search for "subway" in the Toronto Archives, you can find images like <a href=http://gencat.eloquent-systems.com/webcat/systems/toronto.arch/resource/fo1231/f1231_it1409.jpg";>this one</a>.

Nice find, DJ!

Mike, while this is really just an underpass compared to what we call a "subway" now, there certainly is a Queen Street Subway history in this city. Visit that wikipedia link Michael posted. It's a great definitive link! (and thanks Michael for sharing it)

Great post Tanja... I love streets getting this type of facelift. This one was a long time coming. This morning I was walking past the mural... the artist wrote, Gone to Nunavut, will be back in a week. We'll see what happens when he comes back.
