The Mark McKay Show, Episode 2

Posted by Staff / March 11, 2007

I'm back with another show. I want to thank everyone who left a comment, got into the discussion and recommended my last one. People sure have some strong opinions about the city - I guess I shouldn't have expected any less from blogTO!

In this weeks show I take on last weeks snow storm, Stephen Harper's new subway and Canadians for Kyoto.

Leave me a comment, let me know what you think. I'll be back next week with another show.

Wow, that's really hard to watch, what with all the jump cuts like crazy.

And, has anybody told you you sound like Rick Moranis? That's not neccessarily a bad thing.

We need to lead by example on Kyoto Mark. Just because China and India aren't doing it doesn't give us an excuse to opt out.

Matt, I've been told that I look like Rick Moranis.

"Scrap the new subway and the CN Tower will be ok"... LOL. That's the most smartass and stupid solution I've heard yet. Love it!

re: Kyoto: I'm of the opinion that we need to revamp our targets and timelines so that they're reasonable and attainable. I had a great chat with a grade 12 student on the subway on my way home today. He was on his way home from the rally at NPS, and spoke very intelligently on the issues. Queue Whitney Houston if you must, but yeah, it was nice to see the next generation embroiled with passion and ready for action.

re: possible Harper majority: I might have to move to a far, far away country.

Jerrold, I'm glad you see the humor in it. I was worried I was going to incite an online riot with this show!

This is absolutely terrible. is BlogTO trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator of stupidity? Doesn't do too much for BlogTO's image to have someone acting like a cross between Rick Moranis and Weird Al trying to make a point. Absolutely terrible.

Sorry Mark, nothing personal.

Brian, I think I look like Rick Moranis and act like Weird Al! Were you trying to insult me? Because that sounds more like a compliment!

As far as appealing to the lowest common denominator - if you have read any of the comments people have written about my two shows you'll notice that the common dominator on blogTO disagrees with me!

Don't be so serious. Is my sense of humor completely lost on you? Sheesh!

Mark

Mark,

No insult was really intended. I understood the fact that that was the intent. I also see that BlogTO readers (or contributors...) do appreciate the sense of humour.

Perhaps its just me then; I must be devoid of a sense of humour because I just don't find it funny or entertaining. Especially on your second one I though it was extremely hard to watch in addition to low brow. you make some really good points mind you, perhaps its a style disagreement as I think you would be able to communicate your excellent view point in a comical manner in something that isnt as lame. Subways sandwich? please. Like i said, I really think you have potential for better.

PS. I dont mean to crap on you. constructive criticism as I do think you could pull off something both comical and informative without being low brow humour.

Yeowch, that's hard to watch.

I like the video. And I'm wondering why the critics- especially Brian- bother watching it if they don't like it. Brian you've watched it two weeks in a row!

Perhaps I did go a little overboard with the edits Rek.

Thanks for coming to my defense Crips! I knew that this show would evoke some strong feelings in people so I was prepared for the backlash.

To be honest, I welcome the criticism. It only makes me produce a better product and I want as many people to watch my show as possible.

I'm sure I will continue to piss people off as I am sure that my opinnion is not the norm here at blogTO - which I think makes it all the more interesting. Look at all the feedback I have recieved so far! People have pretty strong feelings about my show (and me) - like I said in the show: "you love me or you hate me."

Mark,

Its good to see that you are open to criticism.

Crips, I continue to watch it to see how it develops. Like I said before, I do see excellent potential.

i actually liked the editing, and the character is borderline but has its moments.

lose the sideways hat, its a little much.

I like the character and think his witty sarcasm is refreshing. The quick cutting edits are a little much but overall I think these short video blogs are really fun.

Mark, are you going to air the show every sunday?

I enjoy this show. It's good to get an alternate opinion, and I think it has good production values.

For the first 30 seconds I was like, 'This is awesome'. After the first 30 seconds I was like, 'When is this video going to end?'

Keep up the good w

I love what you're doing here, very original. Some great news footage in there I hadn't seen before too. Since we're offering up opinions of the show I wanted to let you know that the pacing of the first show, both the edits and pace of your dialogue worked better for me.
As far as the low-brow comments go just remember that right now in infotainment Ali G is king, and Jon Stewart is up there too. If you read the Morning Brew and many other posts you'll find blogTO's got a pretty decent sense of humour, glad you're contributing to it.

Tik - while I have been called "quite the character," I can assure that the show is all me and not some caricature. If you find my show borderline, then heaven forbid you meet me in person!

Squiggy - I am making these weekly until the readers come to my door with pitchforks and torches. I wanted to put them out on Saturdays, but they take a fair bit of work, so I think Sunday is more realistic. I'm glad there are more people who like the show then don't, I'd hate to think all my hard work was in vain!

Sam - thanks for the compliment.

Andrew - I'll keep up the "good w."; What happened after the first 30 seconds that made you want the show to end? You know you could always turn it off - but I'm glad you didn't. It takes all kinds, real estate agents and real agents of change.

Sookie - You're right about infotainment. I wonder if Brian finds Ali G and Jon Stewart funny? Do you think if I wore a suit and was on TV he would like my low-brow humor? No offense Brian! My target audience is girls anyways.
