Ad Creep/Nerd Graffiti Spotting

20070207_winlinux.jpgAdvertisements for the newly released Microsoft Vista operating system crept into Finch subway station, and then someone (presumably a computer nerd with a blade) strategically defaced the ad by cutting out letters.

That's one bold (not to mention criminal and risky) way to display loyalty to open source and the relatively nerdy Linux operating system!

According to J. Carlos Navea's blog loconet, the sign has since been fixed.

Bravo! And extra points for being so creative to whomever did it :)

That's one OS with some big security holes, ehhhh? Ehhh? You know that pun was hawt...

MS FTW!

That's okay, but the one at Queen St. station (southbound side) has the Apple logo cut out of the 'o' in 'Wow'.

I'm anti-Mac, and even I found that funny.

That's just plain cool.

Good on them... Microsoft's trashware and business practices (integrating IE into Windows to try to kill Netscape) is responsible for the biggest security threat to the Internet as a whole, resulting in insane things like this attack on the root DNS servers

Its disappointing to see people cheering for defacement of property and vandalizism like this all in the name of "evangelizng Linux" and supporting Free and Open Source Software. Just want we need people associating Linux w/ criminals.

mdintoronto on February 8, 2007 at 8:10 AM

refreshing to see this - its criminal how much public space is given over to advertizing!

I don't agree with many of MS's practices, either. But, one bad decision does not justify another.

I think what Jonathan is saying could be summed as, "play fair, fight fair." Linux lovers would not like it if an MS lover defaced a Linux advert. Linux lovers should honorably stand-out as builders of a better product and community, not for the vandalism we would not tolerate coming at us.

Oh, come oooooooooonnnn!!!! Stop whining, ok?

So if Microsoft racketeers to the moon... that's OK.. cause it's Microsoft and they are entitle to do just anything they want... locking people into their products, extend standards so other standard-compliant systems can't work with microsoft's products (embrace and extinguish... uh, I mean, extend... somebody?), charge enormous amounts of money for any kind of crapware they decide to produce, spit any amount of FUD necessary... and that's all OK!

But If one linux fan removes some letters from one MS advertisements in a subway.... let's just take that punk to the court house and throw him into jail till he learns how to decouple IE from XP.

How pathetic is that?

Michael Hiltz on February 9, 2007 at 2:04 PM

yeah....it is kinda sucky that they trashed someone elses poster...

but nice job

alex on February 9, 2007 at 5:10 PM

how nice that is ... where can i find one of those posters ? i want to cut FreeBsd into it >:)

It should be notice that "Linux" doesn't really advertise at all. It's a community effort, and it manages to spread because unlike some other operating systems, it actually works.

I'm willing to bet that the person who defaced that ad didn't do it to support Linux, but rather did it to point out that people can do a lot better.

As for it being a crime, this is true. The ad is legal -- at least in the technical sense. (Morally, this kind of ad saturation is downright criminal.) But lets keep this in perspective. This isn't an ad defacing an ad, it's politically-charged vandalism directed at a company that has proven itself to be one of the greatest corporate criminals in history.

I saw the guy who did this. It is at Finch Station in Toronto. He looked homeless. I doubt he used a computer, Linux-based or otherwise.

Linux = the best!
