vidTO: Jane Pitfield's Parade Rained on by CityTV

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / November 16, 2006

In a word - ouch!

This was aired live on CityTV at 8:01pm on Monday. Not even one minute after election officials started reporting official poll results (under 10,000 of the total 584,484 votes cast for mayor were in), a CityTV reporter caught up with Jane Pitfield and took little time before giving her some startling news.

The play-by-play commentary:

Generic lead question: Hey, look. It's Jane, arriving at her campaign party venue. How was your day, Jane?

(response)

Cutting straight to the chase, and salt in the wounds all at once: Oh, by the way, we know you've already lost and we like ratings so we're going to tell you that you lost, live, right now, and ask you if you still plan to be a good loser. Make you squirm, you know? Now squirm!

(visibly taken back, shaken. How? Whuh? Huh?)

Token, generic wrapup question: Yes! We got some great squirming there. Thanks, Jane. Let's wrap this one up by putting a sprinkle of positive thinking in there. So it's been hell but also invigorating, right, loser Jane?

(dodges, goes back to address the reporters initial comments)

I wouldn't be surprised if the reporter slammed the microphone to the floor and did a touchdown dance when the camera stopped rolling.

When I saw this live I was a little taken back. That was a rather assinine move by CityTV, if you ask me. And I suppose amusing if you're not a Pitfield fan.

I'm surprised the graphics department didn't throw up "Jane Pitfield: Former Mayoral Candidate".

I thought it was pretty cruel, too, even though I'm not a fan of her. At least let the woman have a little dignity.

I agree with most of the above. I am definitely not a Pitfield fan, but that was a pretty low blow, and CityTV should be ashamed of themselves.

Yeah, I would have sex with Pitfield.

Yeah, I was never a fan of Pitfield, but I felt truly sorry for her watching that clip. Running a campaign is no small matter, so they should at least treat her with a little respect.

I felt sorry for CityTV. Total douchebag move. They looked like assholes on that.
