CanWest Cancels Dose Daily Paper

Canada.com reports that one year following the launch of the Toronto-based free daily, CanWest MediaWorks has decided to cancel the print version of Dose. In a memo to their staff, president and CEO Peter Viner explained that the print version was not meeting financial expectations, and would be halted. The online version is expected to continue to be published. While regular readers may be saddened by the news, I suspect that some TTC custodians are smiling ear-to-ear.

"I suspect that some TTC custodians are smiling ear-to-ear."

Hmm, why's that? I haven't noticed Dose being discarded on TTC property any more often than issues of Metro or 24.

Hi Gloria,
I wouldn't say that I've seen more discarded Dose than 24 or Metro either. My intention was to point out that the dailies in general are often stewn on TTC property, and that it wouldn't surprise me if some people out there would be happy to have one less to step on or have to clean up. No disrepect to Dose or any of the other papers intended! It's PEOPLE that toss them, not the publishers! :)

Ah, ok! I thought you meant Dose particularly (not because of the quality, just some reason I was not aware of). But thanks for the clarification.

I bet the print version of Dose has more readers than this blog.

"Had," kk. The word is "had" more readers.

Dose gave me hope that a Toronto paper could drop the cliched crap and deliver something special.
Maybe it could continue as a weekly, and beef up its content to compete with Now and eye.

I miss it, it was a great place to see young artists' work. It was a fine venue for it too. I prefer it to vice and always read it over metro. (Apparently it died because metro has an exclusive contract with the ttc thereby controlling most of the market share of advertising $$)
