Man Killed in Tim Horton's Explosion

Posted by Tanja / April 2, 2006

april0206_timhortons.jpgWhoa. News breaking at this hour that a man has died, victim to an explosion at a Bloor & Yonge Tim Hortons. More details coming in via the CBC wires.

All that seems to be being said right now is that the explosion happened in the back of the shop -- possibly in the bathroom and that the man died of burns to his body. That leaves room for nothing but jokes in really bad taste, so I'm going to leave this one at that... we'll see what develops.

If you're commuting or driving around this afternoon though, you'll want to avoid the area.

Update: As had to be expected, the bomb rumours are already flying.

Hey, yeah, I was just down there. There was a crowd looking over the police barriers trying to figure out what happened - it looked like an area from Yonge and Bloor to about 2 blocks north had been cordoned off. I overheard a passerby ask a police officer at barrier what happened, and the cop responded, "You'll have to check the news for that, sir."

This might be unrelated (cuz there were some bomb rumours), but I looked up, and the covering on "The Bay" sign on the Bay tower had come off the west side of the building. By "covering" I mean the translucent material that the lights on the sign shine through. It looked like shards of the yellow plastic or glass covering had fallen to the street below, because some of it was on the awning over a shop underneath.
