SkyDome, SkyDome - do not even write this new name!!!

We cannot allow to be amnipulated like this by money and stupid advertising. This is completely wrong way.

Why we do not have such fixsation here in Europe? We could very well - for this few bucks - rename Eiffel Tower or Big Ben. But we do not do such stupid, little things. There is more than money.

:))

The sculpture is the Memorial to Commemorate Chinese Railway Workers, and was built by OCAD prof Eldon Garnet.

Great photo.

matt: Have you seen a European soccer/football uniform lately? Talk about advertising! :-)

Thanks bennymoto!

The Eiffel Tower and Big Ben are not in the same category as Rogers Centre. They are historical landmarks. I don't think anyone will argue that Rogers Centre is going to be a historical landmark. Everyone gets their panties in a twist because a corporate entity bought it. Well, grow up and welcome to the 21st century.

Gr8 pic !!

Will skydome ... GRrrr rogers centrE be as famous as effiel or big ben ? Yup if the darn roof does not blow off like the one in orleans !!

bennymoto - sport teams are quite a different thing, strange you cannot distinguish such categories :))

And to others - you'll NOT have surely Eiffel and Big Ben category sites, unless will learn to appreciate what you have.

We - in Europe - not only have and preserve common memory (heritage), we do preserve sites.

You mostly tear them down to build newer condo/office tower :))

AND what is really obscenic - you (those who see only bucks) do trade history for money.

What is the Hummingbird Centre? What it was? Pantagese/Canon Theatre? etc...

Poor nations that cannot remember what is their past.

And contrary to depreciative moods I like SkyDome. I know also it was THE first stadium with fully retractable roof. This is something to be proud of...

OR MAYBE you as most Canadians (recent survey) do really think that the centre of world's culture is the USA? That could really explain quite a lot.... :DD

This is the kind of Mikey Mouse culture - rename a building to promote chips!

What a great photo! Funny that it's commemorative of Chinese railway workers, as with the sunset and the statue's pose it reminded me of a Soviet propaganda poster.
Photos like this get me all proud to live in a city ripe with little magical moments like this, it's nice to see them captured with great photography.
I'm a little maudlin about the T Dot (got a little teary when video-editing an interview with Kardinal Offishall last month and he was saying nice things about Toronto last month). *sob* it's all so beautiful!
Anyway, great work.

Not an editorial on the content of Matt's last comment, but if you read it to yourself ina Yoda voice, you will appreciate it much more.

Corporate entity buy-out or not, they could have perhaps had the decency to go with The Rogers Skydome or something. There *IS* something special about it that ought to be commemorated! The "Centre" brings it down to the level of a local shopping mall, communmity hockey arena or fitness centre.

I disagree. The company is actually called Rogers Wireless. I could've been "Rogers Wireless Place" or something. I mean, hell, there's a Safeco field! And isn't there a Petsmart stadium, or something equally ridiculous? Finaly, Skydome was always a really stupid name.

Heresy!

(and it's Rogers Communications btw, but enough free google air-time for them...)

Congratulations Torontonians!

I've just read you consider renaming another heritage icon - Nathan Philips Sq.

Is there any end to this craze???

I've always thought about Canada as something between two worlds - Europe and America, taking the best from both. But I'm afraid I'll have to reconsider it. You're becoming so damn 'mickey mouse' american... what a pity!

Name, shmame. It's all relative and just what we're used to. In another 14 years when the naming rights are up for the Air Canada Centre and it becomes the Fortino's Place (or whatever) people will bitch about the loss of "The Hangar".

I still think the award for worst corporate promotion goes to the city of Victoria which heralds the 'SAVE-ON-FOODS MEMORIAL CENTRE'.

Hoooo boy. Makes any concert / event depreciate in value instantly. 'Yeah man! Black Eyed Peas were AMAZING! They totally rocked the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre'.
