Toronto is #10

Aug-23-skyline.jpgWhen the people of Toronto aren't tearing down Dose boxes they are building up, er, buildings. The onslaught of condos and to a lesser extent office towers has given Toronto the 10th best skyline in the world.

Emporis ranks the skylines based on height, not on beauty. Hong Kong came in first followed by New York; Toronto is between Sao Paulo and Guangzhou (Vancouver came in 27th). Emporis also keeps tabs on projected buildings and buildings that were never built, my favorite being the Eaton's on College Street. A neat way to look at what Toronto looks like and could've looked like. Maybe we could've done better than 10, but then again....

Mmmm... Mississauga in the Top 100? Clearly the list needed to stop well short of where it got to.

Emporis just counts skyscrapers - they're not in beauty business.

But if you want to use such cryterium - for now Toronto surely has better skyline then Shanghai or Sao Paolo, not to mention Tokio.

This is subjective of course but I prefer Toronto to NYC, especially when you think what life is in places with too many, too densly built high towers. I'll always remember this persistent humming of aircondition in NYC - and complete lack of sun... :))

it is unfortunate they are not judging the skylines on both height and beauty, as opposed to purely the height.

But... i have to say NYC has a great skyline, yes it is quite crowded and dense, but it is a very wide skyline that represents a lot of history, and in that there is beauty.

do not understand me wrong NYC is interesting to see (because of its skyscrapers), like Las Vegas - they're quite unique in this sense

but for me (subjective view) NYC skyline is NOT interesting at all - exactly because it is so 'wide', it has no esthetical value (bigger is not always better)

Hong Kong, Toronto, Vancouver and many others smaller cities have 'much' more interesting skylines then NYC (which is DULL), because they create some 'visual excitment', some 'tridimentional description of the space'.

Anyway it would be hard to judge any skyline by beauty... Who could do it?
