Advertising Unlimited

Posted by Staff / July 5, 2005

July5_Posters.jpgI'm in Toronto, I go to events in Toronto (not much happens in SW Ontario outside of Toronto) so why is Tourism Toronto advertising to me? I've seen many Toronto Unlimited posters around the city and I don't like it. The website listed on the ad tells me nothing about the city and everything about the image makeover.

This does not make sense to me. Have the people who made the new logo realized that nobody likes it, and now they need to justify the money spent on it to Toronto's own citizens? Will this bring more tourists back to Toronto? Will some tourist visiting see the poster and think "gee, I thought that Toronto's lame, but now that I see this poster I HAVE to return!"

I think that the Toursim department has lost focus since they now have a 3% "destination marketing fee" that most hotels have to pay into. Their coffers seem to be overflowing, and somehow Barrie got Live8. Also noteworthy is the irony that the city is using postering to get a message across.

What's kind of sad is that such a new campaign looks SO dated. This was the best design they could come up with?

Money that could've funded something useful. *sigh*

Even when CityTV interviewed Mayor Miller and asked him about the branding he just froze and had this look on his face; the face that clearly said: "That is one ugly logo".

But like any politician he just B.S.ed his way through the question.

Did you know that Tourism Toronto spent $400.000 just to know that Toronto is UNKNOWN around the world - the statement which I send them FREE some years ago...

This is how they waste money (for costly consultations and other stupid stuff) in Toronto.

Money that they could spent way better - in this case placing a quite big ad campaign in Europe (they make some ads in the USA and UK only).

And someone is well paid to waste this money...

I remember that there was a contest (here in Poland), you could win a trip to Toronto - as I could understand it was an Air Canada contest - and guess what was the question??

About Toronto maybe? Ontario, Canada?

NO - of course it was about the USA!!! Can you imagine such an idiocy???
:))

PS
I'm not discussing the easthetics of the result

Yah, i really don't like those posters either. I stared at it for a few minutes and felt uncomfortably UNenlightened.

Miller let Live8 be hosted outside the city because the federal government wouldn't pay the portion of the staging costs that would make it profitable to the city. toronto has access to funds that Barrie does not, therefore the feds would be forced to aid barrie while it would have decided to give toronto nothing. toronto would have paid out for the show, then paid up to the government. it simply wasn't worth it.

Toronto unlimited" appears to be a trademark rather than a brand or a slogan. Regardless of what the "Toronto unlimited" branding campaign is, I still think that the City of Toronto would appreciate a "Slogan", similar to the "I Love N.Y."; slogan.
