Toronto's Literary Events: July 8-14, 2008

In this week's roundup of Toronto's literary events: Discovering the scent of the moon, political lectures as theatre scripts, copyright and fair use, and a whole lot more screaming at the Scream Festival.

Tuesday, July 8

We've written a lot about author and illustrator Patricia Storms before here on blogTO, but if you haven't had the chance to check out her work just yet, she'll be at TPL's Barbara Frum Branch this afternoon at 2pm as part of the Toronto Public Library Summer Reading Club.

Also on Tuesday:

• Heather Haley, Terence Go, and Luciano Iacobelli feature at the Art Bar Poetry Series at Clinton's at 8pm.
• The Lexiconjury Reading Series returns as part of the Scream Festival, featuring individual and collaborative poetry, at The Pilot at 8pm.
   

Wednesday, July 9

This is Not a Reading Series, Pages Books, and Eye Weekly join forces with the Scream Festival to present "Skye or Miranda or Verandah" at the Gladstone Hotel at 8pm. As part of the event, artists from a range of disciplines will use Kevin Connolly's "Plenty" as inspiration for new texts, songs, visual art installations, and films.

Also on Wednesday:

• Science fans from across the city are invited to attend the launch of Eva Everything's What Does the Moon Smell Like? 151 Astounding Science Quizzes at Nicholas Hoare Books at 7pm.
   

Thursday, July 10

Tightrope Books, established in this city three years ago to help bring urban, subversive, and out-of-the-mold books to the city, launches three new books at The Trane Studio at 7:30pm. The launch features readings from the new works by David Clink, Ursula Pflug, and Dayle Furlong.

Also on Thursday:

• The Scream Festival features a special keynote around fair use and copyright for writers and other artists at The Boat at 7pm.
• Bestselling author David Sedaris signs copies of his newest book at the Indigo Manulife at 7pm.
• Pages Books and Mongrel Media launch the DVD for Late Fragment, and interactive film we've written about on blogTO before, at Tattoo Rock Parlour at 8pm.
   

Friday, July 11

Acclaimed poets Camille Martin, Harmony Rice and Monica Rosas take the stage as part of a special event by the Scream Festival in collaboration with the Toronto Women's Bookstore. The readings, which will touch on issues of language, power, the body, and belonging, kick off at the Toronto Women's Bookstore at 7pm.

Also on Friday:

• If you missed David Sedaris on Thursday, he'll be back for another signing tonight, this time at Ben McNally Books at 8pm.
• The Type Salon Series, as part of the Scream Festival, presents a Fanfilm & Machinima Night at TYPE Books at 11pm.
   

Saturday, July 12

The Scream Festival celebrates another successful year in Toronto with their closing gala hosted by indie-pop group The Bicycles. Expect artists featured at this year's Scream and years past to make an appearance. The even goes down at Revival at 8pm.
 

Sunday, July 13

Poetry & Politics, part of the Scream Festival, is a 'different' theatre production that uses Jack Spicer's last lecture from July 14, 1965 (complete with the annotations by Peter Gizzi's published version) as a script. Definitely not normal theatre material. The production takes place on the patio in front of This Ain't the Rosedale Library at 2pm.

Also on Sunday:

• Composer Paul Swoger-Ruston collaborates with three poets to create musical works based on their writing as part of Aural Transl(oc)ations at Array Studios at 7pm.
   

Monday, July 14

It's almost impossible to ignore the Scream in High Park, which goes down at the Dream Stage in High Park starting at 7pm. The event will feature readings, musical performance, DJ sets, and a whole lot more. It's all hosted by the always-amazing Misha Glouberman.

Also on Monday:

• I can almost guarantee that you'll be hearing a lot about Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids later this week on blogTO. It all goes down at the Gladstone at 8pm.
