Lucullus Bakery Markham

Lucullus Bakery is a mainstay for Hong-Kong style Chinese pastries and baked goods in the GTA. While their bolobao and egg tarts have been top sellers since time immemorial, this Markham location shows us what more they can do.

Inside, the multicoloured tiles and industrial-style chandeliers look to be meticulously crafted to create a luxurious, almost European feel not usually found in Chinese bakeries.

The dim sum here doesn't offer a huge range but it's excellent. The 5-Spice Taro Cake and Meat and Shrimp Dumplings ($1.65) are would hold their own against many of the city's top dim sum restaurants, while the Chicken Sticky Rice ($3) is moist and satisfying.

The highlight for me though, is the stunningly delicious Tiger Prawn Siu Mai ($5.5 for 4). Each dumpling is jumbo-sized, juicy, and packed with flavour.

To drink there's a collection of Chinese liquid desserts, known as tong sui ($3.95 each). There are three kinds here: the satisfyingly smooth black sesame and tapioca, the nutty taro and almond, and my personal favourite: the rich and comforting walnut and red bean.

A must-order is the bolobao with ice cream ($5). The concept is simple yet effective: take one of Lucullus' popular freshly-baked bolobao buns, slice it, and stuff it with homemade ice cream like their London Fog flavour.

As for their popular buns, cookies, bolobao and egg tarts? Not to worry, they're here too.
