Cock-A-Doodle-Doo

Cock-A-Doodle-Doo is a gluten-free bakeshop specializing in pastries that are wheat-, nut-, dairy- and soy-free. The inside of the shop is modest both in terms of size and decor. There's not much in the way of seating - just a single bench up against the wall - but it's primarily a grab-and-go operation, anyhow.

A large white bookshelf separates the space between the front-of-house and the kitchen - mostly hidden from sight - where all the magic happens.

The focal points are, rightfully, the baked goods themselves. In the glass display case are chocolate, coconut, and tahini cookies ($2.50 to $2.75 each); lemon-poppyseed, cranberry-orange, and chocolate-banana muffins ($3.50 each); vegan chocolate-coconut cupcakes ($3.50); black currant and apple cake slices ($3.75 each); and vegan apple tarts ($4.25).

On the wooden counter next to the register are platters of savoury fare: mini pizzas and mushroom tarts, which both go for $5.50 each. Next to those is a basket of sourdough bread ($9 per loaf). There's also a couple of trays filled with bite-size samples of practically all the products, so you can test everything before making a purchase.

Everything here is made in-house. In place of wheat flour, Yulia uses flours made of buckwheat, oats, chickpeas, brown rice and sorghum. There's no refined sugars in any of the products - only natural sweeteners like honey, coconut sugar and maple syrup.

I order two savoury items and one cupcake. The first thing I eat is the mushroom tart made with sauteed onions, herbs, and coconut milk. It's light and easy to devour, and the crust is nice and crumbly.

Next I have the mini pizza made with herbs, tomato sauce, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Although the toppings are great, it's the bread itself that I enjoyed most. The dough is dense but soft and squishy. I could eat this stuff plain.

Lastly, I eat the vegan chocolate-coconut cupcake made with organic chocolate, coconut milk, coconut powder and coconut sugar. It's incredibly moist.

Even if you don't have celiac or a gluten intolerance, this shop is worth a visit; their pastries are delicious in spite of the absence of certain ingredients. And in terms of the baked goods that I had, I didn't get the sense that anything was missing.
