It's slim pickings along the dark stretch of King West by Stanley Park and the vast number of options on nearby Queen West easily draw locals away from neighbourhood eats. It might only take one great place to bring them back -- and six-month-old 930 Sushi could be it.

Whether you loved or hated the proliferation of "tapas" menus at your local dive or the revamped fancy digs around the corner, the trendy concept has certainly slowed down in favour of those who want "real-sized" portions. But even during the rampant interest in small plates dining, many were left wondering where they could get true tapas. Luckily, College Street stalwart Chiado long ago heeded their call by expanding their operations to include the pared down atmosphere of Senhor Antonio Tapas and Wine Bar. The sequestered cluster of atmospheric restaurants in Baldwin Street Village might offer a plethora of cuisines but one glaring omission is French. A short walk off of this charming street towards McCaul will remedy this with the Midi Bistro. Rave reviews weren't enough to keep him around and the tranquil back room of Le Cafe Michi was taken over by Toshi-san. Curious to see if quality could still be found, we ventured for a relaxed lunch one afternoon.

Far along Dundas Street West, past the quaintness of Little Portugal and beyond the gentrification creeping out from West Queen West, there appears to be a dearth of good eating. The darkened windows of small store fronts and family homes line the streetscape but making the trek all the way to Dufferin will reward you with the enticing glassy facade of the Brazil Bakery and Pastry Limited.

After picking up some of my favourite Iranian pastries from NASR Foods, all I need is a little protein to complete my Middle Eastern meal. Luckily, right at the end of the same plaza is one of the best two for one deals in town serving the best shawarma in town.
