Who's the Best Chef in Toronto?

Best Chef TorontoWho's the best chef currently working in Toronto? Is it the soon to be departed Susur? The locavore obsessed Jamie Kennedy? How about Rocco Agostino who's been winning praise for both the Silver Spoon and the newly minted Pizzeria Libretto?

If it's any of the above, we won't know it by the soon to be in production seven-part television series and culinary competition Gold Medal Plates: The Quest for Canada's Best Chef which will air on Travel + Escape in the Spring of 2009.

Pop Montreal PreviewPop Montreal kicks off next week (October 1st) and while normally music coverage on this site doesn't branch outside of our familiar Toronto music circles, I know a bunch of peeps are heading down the 401 to check out some shows, including a number by some deliciously Pop-ish Toronto bands.

So, with this in mind, I'm going to be pimping a podcast over the next week created by podcast host extraordaire Jeremy Morris over on our sister Montreal site - Midnight Poutine.

Starbucks to Ruin Kensington Market?

Kensington Market StarbucksThe National Post is reporting that Starbucks is in talks to move into Kensington Market. The location? The shuttered J&J Fruit Market at the corner of Nassau and Augusta Ave.

If the deal is sealed Starbucks would be hawking what some consider overpriced lattes and burnt coffee just steps from I Deal Coffee and some of Toronto's other top cafes.

A Department of Culture We Can Love

Department of CultureWe've been a bit remiss about not mentioning the Department of Culture until now. The grassroots organization, founded after some informal talks at The Rhino has been leading the war of words against Harper's much derided promises to cut the level of arts funding in Canada.

They've also been a force behind a number of grassroots events in Toronto like the Townhalls (see video of Naomi Klein's speech) at the Theatre Centre earlier this month and the current Gone in 30 seconds video contest.
