Patrick Wolf Strips in Protest
On Wednesday evening, I waited outside The Mod Club for over an hour in the drizzling, cold rain, waiting to see London-born Patrick Wolf. There are a few guaranteed facts about Patrick Wolf's live show: there will be costumes, there will be varying degrees of nudity, and all present will be scrubbing away the glitter for a month afterward. However, halfway through the set, I realized that this gig in particular will doubtless remain etched in (even Patrick's) mind for some time. Music
Maria Taylor Shows Experience, Guts
Friday was a busy night at the El Mocambo. The stage upstairs hosted an amateur night for teenage musicians, while Maria Taylor wowed her own (small but respectable) crowd below.Maria's first opener was Too Many Sisters. I rarely hear much about country bands in Toronto, but Carla MacNeil and Stephen Stanley make a great pair for the genre. I wasn't able to find out where Stanley grew up (MacNeil, singer and violinist, hails from Nova Scotia), but their song "Skyscrapers" made it clear that it wasn't in the city. Regardless, Stanley has an impressive history here: his previous band, The Lowest of the Low, was recently inducted into the Canadian Indie Music Hall of Fame.

Sweet Thing Share Tambourines at The Mod Club
For weeks, my friends and I had been counting down to March 21st, the night we got to see two amazing Toronto bands, Sweet Thing and We Are the Take. The added bonus was that they were to perform at our favourite venue, The Mod Club.We were expecting a fun night, but "fun" just doesn't cut it.

Chart Attack at the Horseshoe Tavern
On Saturday night I went to the Horseshoe Tavern, for a night of music handpicked by Chart Attack and the 'Shoe. Headlining the night was Prince Edward Island's Two Hours Traffic, who took a break from recording in Halifax to play at their "favourite venue in Canada". Music
Fritz Helder and the Phantoms at CiRCA
I don't know much about Toronto's electronic scene, but one act I can't get enough of is Fritz Helder and the Phantoms. Their act, definitively speaking, isn't new to me. Each show consists of roughly the same set list. Diego and Pastel's choreography hasn't changed. Fritz still wears heels. Silk is still without a shirt. And Fierce is always fiercely present in the background.
