Yitz's Deli Draws Us In From the Cold

Pastrami Sandwich at Yitz's Deli
Standing at the chilly corner of Eglinton West & Avenue Rd, the bright lights of Yitz's deli appear like a mirage in the midst of another blizzard. No surprise, of course, as nothing could be more appealing with all this winter weather than good ol' stick-to-your-ribs comfort food.

Shuffling through the sausage-handled doors and past the bustling bakery entranceway, my friends and I settle into the back of this 35-year-old Toronto landmark and order up favourites from all over the menu.

Art Square Cafe: Dessert Delights on Dundas

Seige of Art coffee at Art Square Cafe
While the AGO will remain closed for "transformation" 'til later this year, there is still plenty to art to experience on this stretch of Dundas West - and by that I mean *culinary arts*, of course....

The Art Square cafe, located directly across from the AGO, features an exhibit of painted works and a little hidden gem of a cafe all tucked into one narrow townhouse-turned-gallery.

Pho Rang Dong Brings Vietnamese to Corso Italia

Spring Rolls, Deep Fried Cinnamon Ham on Vermicelli at Pho Rang Dong on St Clair West
Living near Lansdowne & St Clair, a pho craving is usually satisfied by heading westwards to the little pho village that's formed over near Weston Road. Thai Bangkok Adds That Special Touch

Thai Bangkok Restaurant in Toronto's Chinatown
Walking home on a bitterly cold January evening is hardly my idea of a good time, but one positive side-effect is friends' willingness to try out any restaurant I pick - just so long as it has some form of central heating.

We'd only been walking a few minutes when I suggested the cozy and inviting Thai Bangkok Restaurant on Spadina. Between dim lights, Thai-inspired decor and photos of spicy noodles in the window, it was an easy sell. We walk in and are quickly greeted by a friendly waitress, already carrying a pot of hot tea for everyone.

Annapurna: Bright Lights, Cool Plates.

Spinach Casserole at Annapurna
The atmosphere at Annapurna vegetarian restaurant in the Annex strives for quiet, calm and meditative - just what you'd expect from a resto operated by followers of Hindu meditation guru Sri Chinmoy. Gentle sitar music is playing, everyone is speaking in hushed tones, and the note at the table informs us that loud cell phone chatter is discouraged here.

Homestyle Comfort Food at Country Style Hungarian

Chicken Schnitzel at Country Style Hungarian Restaurant
Having spent the holidays away from home, I missed out on family dinners and all festive platefuls of comfort food that come along with the season. Feeling incomplete, I called up a couple friends I still had undelivered gifts for, and suggested we check out Country Style, a little Hungarian diner in the Annex. Surely, a big Eastern European meal would hit the spot.
