Little Red Riding Hood, Revisited

Little Red Riding HoodMy memory can be a little hazy at times. When I walked into an exhibit at the Gallerie Celine-Allard that interpreted the childhood fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, I was stuck at how certain aspects did not remind me of the story at all, notably the hand-drawn buckets collecting sap from the paper panels acting as maple sugar trees.

As I walked in between panels, I saw a video that showed the artist making a doll out of bits of red and white material. Again, my memory sucks... but I distinctively remember and recognize an important element that was missing from the story. Where's the wolf?!

Block Chairs and Holy StumpFrom wall to wall, floor to ceiling, it's hard to not take notice of the brightly red painted space next to the Drake Hotel General Store.

Entitled "In The Red", the award-winning, reputable design firm Thout has temporarily taken over the narrow space, to exhibit their popular and newer furniture designs while helping design aficionados beat the recession blues.

Come Up To My Room Triptych 1For six successful years, Come Up To My Room has attracted hundred of visitors to the historic Gladstone Hotel to see unique exhibits by emerging and established Canadian designers. Whatever discipline or background they have, these artists are given free range to implement their creative concepts and transform the hotel's rooms and public spaces.

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the designers themselves, but I also enlisted the help of two individuals from the CUTMR's curatorial collective, Caroline Shaheed and Jeremy Vandermejl, to help me better understand some of the eleven rooms and fourteen public installations.

radiant darkKicking off Toronto Design Week was Radiant Dark's opening reception of Elegant Corruptions. Curated by MADE's Shaun Moore and Julie Nicholson, their packed showroom showcased the works of contemporary Canadian designers. Rubbing elbows with the industry's hot designers was fun but seeing their work was an exciting feast for my eyes.

This year's theme, 'Elegant Corruptions', juxtaposes the highs and lows found in our culture and transforms them into new and familiar objects. Part art installations, part utilitarian objects, this exhibit shows us some of the best in Canadian design.

With over 30 design firms participating, a few items struck my eye, including some Toronto-based talent.
