Luminato 2009: Owen Pallett and Tales of the Uncanny

Posted by Robin Sharp / June 11, 2009

Owen Pallett luminatoOwen Pallett, indie rock oracle and man about town, is playing a free concert for Luminato / North by Northeast tonight at 9:30pm.

Along with Robert Lippok (Berlin electronica artist) and the irrepressible 'Do Make Say Think', Owen will be musically accompanying a 90-year-old German film, 'Tales of the Uncanny', live at Dundas Square. It's the film's first time playing in Canada, and I can't think of a more bizarre setting than the ultra sleek intersection of Dundas and Yonge to catch a silent horror picture from 1919.

This isn't Owens first crack at the accompaniment game. I interviewed him last year when he contributed to a live soundtrack of "Crusin' 57" (a classic gay porn film) for Pop Montreal.

I caught up with Owen this week to ask a couple questions about tonight's show in Toronto.

Posted by Robin Sharp / April 5, 2009

hamilton ontarioThe terms 'Hamilton, Ontario' and 'tourist destination' don't usually find themselves in the same sentence. That's just the way it is.

Nonetheless, having never tasted the metallic lips of Steeltown myself, I eventually yielded to my urge to 'discover'. I hopped on the GO Train for eighteen dollars return (so glamorous; I felt like I was on Canadian television in 2005) and made my way to that other city on the lake.

Dance Yourself To Death is that girl in high school who was smart, beautiful, funny...and you always wondered why she was still single.

Since releasing their debut E.P. in 2005, the local group have appeared as themselves in an Elton John produced film, played every major music festival in the city and toured Germany to huge acclaim. Nonetheless, the scenesters in Toronto are still just learning their name.

The Toronto Portraits - Nils Edenloff

Nils EdenloffNils Edenloff (The Rural Alberta Advantage). The Junction

Nils Edenloff is the lead singer of a Toronto band that sings about Alberta. I wonder if there are any bands in Alberta that sing about Toronto? Probably, but I'll bet their lyrics aren't very flattering to our little city.
