Ryerson Image Arts grads strut their stuff at META 2012

Meta 2012Ryerson's School of Image Arts is hosting its annual graduating class showcase, this year held at Airship 37 in the Distillery District. Today is the last day to check out the student installations designed to make you think or play while tightly-wound suits pass around melon skewers, jerk chicken and cocktails. This year's theme is how technology affects the modern era (and in many cases, Karl Marx.)

Culture talks for geeks begin at inaugural Ignite Culture Toronto

Ignite Culture TorontoA TED-talk style networking event for Toronto culture geeks? Don't mind if they do. This past Thursday, "culture enthusiast" Jenn Nelson ran Toronto's first ever Ignite Culture night, inspired by the Seattle-born Ignite movement. Held at the ING Cafe, with its orange, "deconstructed MAC" aesthetic, 12 speakers were invited to speak for five minutes each as their slides advanced automatically every 15 seconds. From mitten collections to the social nuances of DJ culture, here's a rundown of what was covered.

Where to learn Brazilian martial arts and dance

Ginga FitnessToronto-based graphic artist Ken Homer never thought he would become a fitness instructor until some friends asked him to come up with a plan to help them lose weight. He drummed up a workout which combined Brazilian Capoeira with hip hop, reggae, and Latin dance. Today, Homer teaches this new discipline to over a thousand students across the GTA.

Where to learn to kickbox in Leslieville

TKMTEarlier this year martial arts guru Warren Lee opened the latest outpost of his now three-location kickboxing and muay thai academy in Toronto. This one, on rapidly developing Carlaw Avenue in Leslieville, might just be filled to the gills once all the loft style condos in the area are completed. Better get that workout in while you can.
