Danish TorontoThe best danishes in Toronto come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, flavours and colours, proving that the danish has moved far beyond its humble origins, and evolved into a modern, endlessly flexible pastry to suit all tastes. Apparently, the danish was born in 1850, when foreign workers were brought into Denmark to work in the bakeries while domestic bakers were on strike over wages. The strikebreakers included Austrian bakers, who used their own traditional recipes, which the Danes loved and continued to demand after the strike ended. The Austrian-made pastries evolved into what is now called the danish, and Toronto bakeries continue to put their own spin on it.

HuddlersAre you tired of wandering the city, trying to find a good pickup game of dodgeball? Are you becoming an athletic pariah because you keep double booking your recreational sports commitments?

If so, Huddlers - an online platform to help recreational athletes discover where to play sports, manage their sports schedules, and find the right products and equipment - may be just what you need.

"We focus on the who, what and where of recreational athletics," says 26-year-old founder and CEO, Adam Epstein. Huddlers, which is currently a web app, is in private beta, and plans to publicly launch at the beginning of August. The company is also in the process of prototyping the mobile app.

I recently met up with Epstein, who briefed me on his game plan for the company.

Get to know a Toronto startup: Shore Up

Shore UpWhose recommendation for a new café would you trust more: your best friend, or foodboy23, a stranger who posts his views on a public website? Ours? Toronto-based company Shore Up is banking on the idea that "friends know best," and has created an app that will allow users to recommend businesses they like to their friends, and earn rewards when those friends visit places on the strength of their recommendations.

Shore Up launched in public beta at the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference in April. Since then, about 150 users have signed up and Shore Up is planning to launch its second version of the app later this month. I recently spoke with CEO and Co-Founder Matthew Woo, 21, who filled me in on what Shore Up is up to.
