Get Out Your Walking Shoes - TTC Strike To Start Monday, April 21, 2008

UPDATE (April 20th, 6:45pm): The strike has been averted!
Original post:
Will they or won't they? It's been the question dogging folks about the looming TTC strike for weeks. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 was in a legal strike position starting April 1st and it seemed pretty imminent that there would be no transit available. A last minute reprieve meant that on April Fool's day we were still able to make our way across the city via the relative comfort of the TTC to take part in April Fool's pranks (oh, and work and stuff).
Unfortunately, the strike-free situation may be no more. Today we were given more than the promised 48 hour notice of a strike. Beginning 4am Monday April 21, 2008, TTC workers will be on strike if a deal is not struck by 4pm on Sunday April 20.

Bring on the fun! I realize there's been a fair bit of good, but dour, stuff listed lately, this week there are a more irreverent theatre picks available along with the more serious offerings. As always, if there is not a description with the show it has be described in a previous entry.
If you were chomping at the bit waiting for these listings yesterday, sorry about the delay, some extenuating circumstances led to me not being able to post yesterday. Luckily they are here now, so, without further ado, theatre listings for this week are after the jump.

Green Light, Green Light, Red Light! (Camera)

So, here we are, all grown up, gone are the days of playing Red Light/Green Light with friends, and now into the real world of traffic lights that it so effectively prepared us for.
But, as with anything, there are people who don't follow the rules of the game as closely as they should. Enter red-light cameras - now new and improved with higher fines and more locations! Oh. Wait. Is that new and improved?
There has, of course, been controversy about this since the beginning, and now with the fine being raised from $180 to $500, as you can imagine, folks are all a twitter again.

Thursday Theatre Review: Beyond Mozambique

George F Walker was all the rage in my university theatre program. People would swoon at the mention of his name, and excepts from his shows appeared in some form or another in pretty much every class. Apparently some things never die, because when I heard that Factory was mounting a production of Beyond Mozambique I leapt at the chance to go see it.
I have to say, the show didn't disappoint. Although it's a reasonably early Walker play (first produced in 1974), it has all the elements you'd expect from one of his shows. It's full of the signature Walker combination of torment and hilarity. John was my show-partner for this production; he was in the same Walker-obsessed university theatre program as I was, so it was no real surprise for me that when I asked him what he thought of the show he, without hesitation said, "It was great!"

This Week in Theatre: April 8 2008
Okay, so, maybe the warm weather is making you think that you'd rather sit on a patio having pint with friends than being anywhere inside - a noble pursuit to be sure. Something that will enhance that activity by providing excellent fodder for conversation on the patio is going to a play. Here's a list of stuff that's going on in Toronto this week...
If a play doesn't have a description it has been described in a previous entry.
Shows are listed after the jump.
