Kid Koala at The Boiler House

Posted by John Hargraft / August 19, 2008

Kid Koala, toronto, the boiler house I went to check out Kid Koala and iNSiDEaMiND on Saturday night at The Boiler House, in the Distillery District. I was amazed with how lively and busy it was there at 10pm. The Boiler House (also known as Building 46) is gorgeous inside with its warm red brick walls, and huge timber supports. The room seems cavernous and industrial, but is actually very cozy when it starts to fill with patrons.

The DJ booth was at least ten feet off the ground and set left of the main bar. There were four or five turntables set up for the opening act iNSiDEaMiND. These two Torontonians played a theatrical set, engaging the crowd while showing off their amazing skills.

Kid Koala, toronto, boiler houseThis Saturday August 16th, DJ Kid Koala is in Toronto and will be playing a unique show at The Boiler House.

Posted by John Hargraft / August 4, 2008

Rancid, koolhausVeteran punk band, Rancid played the first of two sold-out shows Saturday night, at the Kool Haus. The venue was packed solid with punks of all ages.

I have been a fan of Rancid since high school, back in the early nineties. I was excited to get to see them play live for the first time, after missing them at various Warped tours.

DMC 2008: The Toronto Eliminations

Posted by John Hargraft / July 28, 2008

DMC Comp_1-small.jpg
The Toronto elimination round of the 2008 DMC DJ Championships, took place on Saturday night. Presented by REMG entertainment, the turntablist showdown was and held as part of the Wakestock Boarder's Bash, at the Sound Academy.

The pairing of the DJ battle, with the Wakestock afterparty didn't mesh so well. It seemed that partygoers were much more interested in the events happening outside at the Polson Pier Cabana - a bikini contest and inflatable gladiator games. When the majority of your attendees are 20 year-old, male, extreme sports enthusiasts; it's hard to get their attention on the DMC competition, which started at 10 o'clock in the mostly empty main room.

NXNE'08: Kakkmaddafakka, The I Spies, Hey Rosetta!, and Matt Mays & El Torpedo

Posted by John Hargraft / June 15, 2008

Matt Mays.jpgIt was Saturday night, and I was ready to check out Norway's kakkmaddafakka, Toronto's I Spies, Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta! and Dartmouth's Matt Mays & El Torpedo. It was day three of the NXNE festival and I felt fantastic about it, but I was also a little sorry that this would be the last night.

To the El Mo I went, for a 9pm start of Bergen, Norway's Kakkmaddafakka. It took me a moment to grasp what I was saying when pronouncing this bands name, and I recommend not doing it if children are present.

The Sainte Catherines.jpgKnowing that Friday evening was going to be a rain-soaked affair, I decided to stay put at The Bovine Sex Club. And it was another full night of rock and roll, this time courtesy of The Nymphets, Trigger Effect, The Sainte Catherines, and The Real McKenzies.
