Vegetarian Food FairThe 25th annual Vegetarian Food Fair took place this weekend at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre. Despite having excluded one of the major food groups, the festival was bursting at the seams with booths displaying delectable meat alternatives and, my favourite, abundant samples.

In the past, I have made mild attempts at becoming vegetarian that never lasted longer than two weeks. This is mainly due to my lack of culinary competence, and the fact that greasy cheeseburgers are my ideal hangover food.

hot and spicy festival torontoThe Hot & Spicy Food Festival brought its mouthwatering 12th edition to Harbourfront Centre this long-weekend, as many gathered to enjoy some treats with heat. While some of the festival's mouthwatering aspect was partly due to the vast quantities of delicious eats, it mostly stemmed from the oh-gosh-my-mouth-is-on-fire-and-head-is-about-to-explode dishes the festival is known for.

Upon arriving at the festival, I found myself walking into the best part of a cooking demonstration: the samples. In this particular case, Chef Ryan Smolkin of Smoke's Poutinerie concocted a curry chicken poutine.

For $2 it was possible to get a decent sized sample, which was mildly spicy while having gravy that was surprisingly sweet. Alas, it would probably have been a dish I would have deemed delicious enough to attempt making for myself (albeit with something along the lines of McCain's frozen French fries) had I made it to the actual demonstration.

buskerfest toronto 2009After a decade of entertaining, Scotiabank's BuskerFest Toronto 2009 edition kicked off yesterday with the Mayor, some cake, and a world record broken in order to celebrate its anniversary. Over the years the festival has made its mark; it saw approximately one million visitors from all over the world just last year.

This year it started with Mayor David Miller riding in on a giant contraption (for lack of a better word) followed by a cake cutting ceremony. And then (no offense, Mayor) the really exciting stuff began.

south asia festival torontoPeople were dancing in the streets of Toronto this weekend at the Festival of South Asia. Held along Gerrard Street in Toronto's east end, the festival was a celebration of South Asian food, art, and culture.

Beginning at two o'clock and running until eleven o'clock, the main stage attracted a constant crowd with its long lineup of tireless dancers. There was always something to see as the performers demonstrated various forms of traditional dance ranging from Bollywood to Bhangra to Dandiya Raas.

toronto church street fetish fairIt was hot for more than one reason at the sixth annual Church Street Fetish Fair this weekend. With temperatures and humidity soaring, Sunday proved to be the kind of day one would ideally spend in a bathing suit by a pool... or for some, in their birthday suits and loafers at the Fetish Fair.

It turns out I was slightly overdressed for this event (in my mini-shorts and tank top), as most opted for more of a breeze in their chaps or other various small strips of leather. When temperatures hit their peak, I think I might have been just a tiny bit jealous.
