No Shame: Water Colour

It's almost time for Fall! Ok! Ok! Don't groan. Fall isn't as terrible as most Canadians make it out to be. While the lot of us prefer the nice, warm weather of the Summer, some are comfortable saying goodbye to the mid-year favourite of many and welcome the colour-changing leaves and windy skies of Fall. Well, guess what? There is a band that is very, very good at opening their warm arms to you in an Autum-esque way, and they will be a part of the weekly Tiger Bar party, NO SHAME. They are Water Colour, a side-project of Ohbijou.

Magic Weapon
As we pass the half-way point of the summer, the heat and humidity increases with much disdain for us humans. So what do we do? We resort to the patios, to the cold drinks and to a lesser extent, more sweating. Why? Because we like to dance! Even if you think you can't dance, underneath it all, you can dance. NO SHAME continues its summer trek on Thursday evening with a young but growing Montreal project called Magic Weapon.

The Vulcan Dub Squad
The Vulcan Dub Squad are, and have always been, a non-identity: they have preferably stayed in the middle. I remember seeing them for the first time; they sported zip-up trainers, dress pants and face masks to conceal their identities, choosing to not put a face to a name. They found it wasn't necessary to be considered iconic or known for image. Now leading into their 6th release entitled 'The New Designers', The Vulcan Dub Squad ("The Vulcans") have removed their masks and are trying something new...on stage.

Plants and Animals
A few weeks ago, Montreal's Plants and Animals performed a killer set at The Tiger Bar. The band showed that there are bands out there that are so tight, it would take something gargantuan to separate them. Now I'm sure a lot of you missed out of this, and that's okay. We're all allowed to be given second chances, yes? Well, in my opinion, I believe in giving more than one chance because there might be three, four, or yes, EVEN EIGHT times where you'll want to see a band and keep missing them because of some made-up reason. The lot of you will probably be going to Hillside this weekend (yes, that's one of the eight reasons). However, for those that will not, you can check out Plants and Animals this Friday at The Silver Dollar.

Spy Machine 16
Spy Machine 16 is a power-punk band from Guelph. All of their songs sound like they're from the punk movement where the government isn't welcome in your bedroom. For those who've heard of the band, there are two things you automatically know: 1) they are political, anti-imperialists and, 2) they will set the dance floor on fire. The band was featured on this week's Tornoto Independent Music Podcast (#77). Have a listen!

Now for the good stuff: Spy Machine 16 is celebrating the release of their CD entitled 'How Things Come Apart' on Thursday night at Toronto's ever-growing weekly music shindig, NO SHAME. Along with them will be the fantastic Waterloo techno crunk-tet, Bocce. Disco-House group OPOPO will join the ranks along with a damce-pop band from Ottawa called F!GHTF!GHTF!GHT.

Spiral Beach

NO SHAME continues its summer series which happens every Thursday night at The Tiger Bar, with Toronto's young but exciting musical party, Spiral Beach. Also part of the evening will be killer freestyle/electro duo, Big Digits. Known for floor-shaking basement shows, the Massachusetts duo are likely to cause The Tiger Bar to get noise complaints (yes, I'm aware it's in the basement, but stranger things have happened). Finally, Montreal pop quintet Is That The Sound Of My Voice? Bring in their harmonies and cute but hilarious lyrics to Toronto to open up the show.

To recap:

Who: Spiral Beach / Big Digits / Is That The Sound Of My Voice?
When: Thursday, July 5th @ 9pm
Where: The Tiger Bar (414 College St. - downstairs)
How Much: $5
