TPL hosts online author chat tonight: Wayne Johnston

No need to bundle up to chat with author Wayne Johnston about his books or the writing life; all you need is an Internet connection. The Toronto Public Library is hosting a live online chat tonight with Wayne Johnston from 7:30-8:30 PM (local time).
If you're not familiar with this part of TPL's Book Buzz, the Toronto Public Library's Virtual Book Club, do check it out. A new book discussion is launched in the message board on the first day of every month.
Wayne Johnston's book, The Custodian Of Paradise, was featured in November. Much of the humour and many of the quirky characters in Johnston's novels were drawn from his childhood in Newfoundland. Johnston served as the poetry editor for The Fiddlehead Magazine before leaving Newfoundland and settling in Toronto.
You can find more info on the Toronto Public Library Book Buzz Page.

Penrose Fish & Chips: Deep-Fried Nirvana

So what if it's deep-fried and bad for you? It's hard to care when you're diving into a big plate o' fish and chips at Penrose's (Mt. Pleasant, south of Eglinton), one of the oldest fish & chip shops in Toronto.

David Francey: Story and Song at Hugh's Room

When David Francey first starts talking, you forget that he's a two-time Juno winner and that his songs have been performed and recorded by artists worldwide. In a quiet voice with a hint of a Scottish brogue, he introduces himself and the other person on stage, guitarist Craig Werth.
David seems a bit shy at first, and confesses that he's a hermit-type. But then he starts telling a story about the song he's going to sing and you find yourself swept up in the tale.

Lemongrass Restaurant on Bayview

"This is the best calamari I've ever had," Jeff says to me suddenly. We're sharing the deep-fried calamari at Lemongrass on Bayview, a restaurant which specializes in Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, and offers a wide range of vegetarian options.

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair: Only Two Days Left

I've been going to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for years now with my sister and my nieces. It's the largest indoor combined agricultural, horticultural, canine and equestrian event in the world, and gives city types a glimpse into country living. This year's Fair runs through until Sunday (only two days left!) in the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place.
Keep reading to see giant mutant vegetables, Xena The Warrior Rabbit, and a RAWF cartoon.

Dr. Generosity: Home Of The Best Ever Tuna Sandwich

Looking for the "The Best Ever Tuna Sandwich"? You can find it at Dr. Generosity's in Bloor West Village; it says so on their menu. Tuna is an underrated sandwich, in my opinion, and tends to evoke memories of sad and soggy school lunches. I'm grateful to Dr. Generosity for helping me overcome my childhood tuna trauma.
