The best grilled cheese sandwich in Toronto is a toss-up among more gastronomically diverse options than you'd expect. Adored by pauper-students and up-towners alike, the grilled cheese is the epitome of comfort and simplicity in cooking; the satisfying, back-up meal that almost anyone can throw together with zero time and resources. When those resources are plentiful, it's astounding to see what can be done with the basic staples of bread and cheese. Comments (30)

The promise of "impossibly delicious goodness made possible," is far too confident not to be met. And, sure enough, the lovely folks at OMG Baked Goodness made good on their word and then some with a few of the freshest, plushest cakes I've ever had. The vegan options are surprisingly good, too.
Hansen's Danish Pastry Shop in East York makes me feel like my craving for sweets (in alarming volume and frequency) is a good thing - and that it's worth getting off and back on the bus for. Hundreds of incredible cookies and assorted pastries (and plenty of herring!) await.
Leslieville has some new eye candy in the shape of a cafe called Sophie. Offering quiches, soups, sandwiches, and tourtiere(!), it's a delicious breath of fresh air. And, if my recent lunch visit serves as any indication, I'm not the only one who's taken to breathing it in.
SpiceSafar is comfort and sophistication on King West. Cafe by day and lounge by night, I popped in on a rainy afternoon for a smooth Americano and a delightful danish, which was served in a (nearly too) cute basket.
Quaff Cafe may be pretty new to Queen West but it's quickly becoming popular. A gently-decorated interior, unobtrusive music, caffeine, and free WiFi make it the perfect workspace. And the one-bite butter tarts, Alfajores, oatmeal cookies, and more substantial eats like sandwiches and hearty soups satisfy a wide array of cravings.
