Posted by Danielle D'Ornellas / May 2, 2012

Hot Docs 2012 TorontoIt's officially the mid-point of the 2012 Hot Docs Film Festival. Some films have come and gone, but there are many more to go.

Hot films for the latter-half of the festival look to include the Queen of Versailles and China Heavyweight which begin Wednesday night, Indie Game the Movie on Thursday and Theo Fleury: Playing with Fire on Friday. For those not in Toronto, Hot Docs Live! will be screening both China Heavyweight and Indie Game the Movie across the country in selected Cineplex theatres. Visit the website for more details.

Here are films to watch (and skip) during the second half of Hot Docs, and a few to keep tabs on beyond the festival.

Highs and lows of Wizard World Comic Con 2012

Posted by Danielle D'Ornellas / April 16, 2012

Wizard World Comic Con 2012Over the past few years, Toronto has found itself the heart of all things nerdy in Canada. We seem to have a zombie event every month, there's a film festival for everything, gaming cafes are all the rage and we have two major comic conventions to choose from.

This weekend was the Wizard World Comic Con, not to be confused with FanExpo, the major nerd convention that takes over in late August. Wizard World is smaller but sometimes that's not a bad thing.

Festival fever has begun in Toronto with two drastically different events taking the city by storm. The TIFF Bell Lightbox is full-up with programming for TIFF Kids, the new younger version of the Sprockets Film Festival, while the Images Festival takes a turn around the AGO Jackman Hall and the Toronto Underground Cinema. The Projection Booth has some fun with Earth Day, the Mediatheque introduces us to some every-day heroes and the Bloor Cinema takes on cultural hallmarks like record fans and the comic industry.

This Week in Rep Cinema: We Need to Talk About Kevin, Waterlife, Pom Poko, Girl Model, Crispin Hellion Glover

This Week in Rep Cinema starts on a somber note this week because one of my favourite hidden gems of the city has a countdown to shutdown, the NFB Mediatheque. Due to CBC cuts, the NFB will be reduced to a simple gallery exhibition space and the viewing stations and theatre will be shut down. You only have until September to enjoy one of the more unique facets of cinema in the city. Don't waste it.
