Where to order authentic deep dish pizza in Toronto

Posted by Carli Vierke / February 21, 2012

deep dish pizzaThis online-only pizza joint might just make the best deep dish Toronto has to offer, but it doesn't come cheap. Currently on offer via Orderit.ca while the restaurant gauges the local market for Chicago-style pizza, the delivery charge is, however, made easier to stomach by the quality of the product.

Toronto office buildings set to get local food markets

Posted by Carli Vierke / February 9, 2012

Toronto Office MarketsThe Toronto Office Markets are a recent project by Alimentary Initiatives designed to bring locally grown food to the lobbies of office buildings. Artisan market in style, different vendors will sell their goods to the employees and guests of the office. Offering a range of freshly baked breads, cheeses, produce, and ready-to-eat items like samosas and raw pizza, the concept offers food for now and later.

In other words, you can grab something for lunch as well as some bread, soup, veggies and cheese for dinner tonight. "We don't want people to be 'food sleuths,'" Aruna Handa, the head of Alimentary Initiatives tells me, "we want to bring food to where people already go. We're trying to make local, organic food convenient."

Cass McCombs charms the crowd at the Garrison

Posted by Carli Vierke / January 29, 2012

Cass McCombs LiveCass McCombs' show at the Garrison this Friday night was a treat for all those in attendance. The opener, Frank Fairfield — a violin and banjo-toting songwriter from California — set the stage with whimsical, southern-style tunes that had the crowd tapping their feet and clapping along with the occasional "Yip!" hollered into the night.

Caveman play hungry but walk stiff at the Horseshoe

Posted by Carli Vierke / January 12, 2012

Cavemen Live Toronto2011 was an important year for Caveman. The band went from relative obscurity, to being named one of NPR music critic Bob Boilen's top "discoveries" of the year, and a track recommendation from indie music "gods" Pitchfork. With the fall release of their debut album Coco Beware now beyond the hump of end-of-year buzz however, the band has a relatively small window to continue riding the coattails of their hype.

A new entrant into the gourmet grilled cheese fray

Posted by Carli Vierke / January 10, 2012

gourmet grilled cheese torontoGrilled cheese sandwiches are kind of like Honda Civics — as completely satisfactory as the base models are, they also beckon to be souped up (no pun intended). And since Toronto's no slouch when it comes to gourmet grilled cheese joints, I was curious to see how this much-hyped new addition to the scene would fare. If you've got your own speciality ketchup, after all, the sandwiches better be damn good.
