High Park finally has a cafe to call its own

Posted by Amanda / April 17, 2010

high park cafeIn an area that has been devoid of a proper cafe for decades, this newcomer to High Park is more than welcome. Cafe Novo doesn't take anything for granted, and works hard to bring its customers a great hangout, good cheer, and wonderful coffee.

The Stem reincarnated

Posted by Amanda / April 11, 2010

The stemThe Stem is long gone but at least in its place we've got a worthy successor. Yes, BQM Diner is the real deal and even though my multiple lunch visits weren't without their flaws the 2009 opening of this gourmet burger joint is one of the best things to happen to the stretch of Queen West east of Spadina in a very long time.

Toronto's grande dame of cheese

Posted by Amanda / April 2, 2010

grande cheese torontoOpen since 1970, the Cheese Boutique supplies a cornucopia of gourmet food items and freshly prepared meals, making it popular among chefs and amateurs alike. I grew up shopping at the original location in Bloor West Village, but having not visited since its move to Etobicoke eight years ago, I figured it was about time to check back in.

New sushi joint opens in the Annex, but is it cheap enough?

Posted by Amanda / March 29, 2010

Akai Sushi TorontoThe newest sushi joint in the Annex has opened up shop a little south of the competition. Joining the growing list of restaurants on Harbord, Akai Sushi serves both Japanese and Korean fare at the corner of Major. But it's a hair more expensive than the Sushi on Bloor and New Gens of the world to the north. Is the extra cost justified?

Korean fusion that brings me back for a second visit

Posted by Amanda / March 17, 2010

Korean Fusion TorontoSwish by Han opened last summer just west of the St. Lawrence Market. Featuring a posh interior and a unique take on Korean/American fusion, this is an excellent place to order yuzu tea, kimchee and bibimbap. In fact, I enjoyed the food so much that I returned a week after my initial visit to sample even more menu items.

Posted by Amanda / March 15, 2010

pho comfort junctionOn a cold and rainy late-winter day, nothing says body- and soul-warming like a hearty, brothy, home-style bowl of delicious Vietnamese pho.

Speedy, no-nonsense service, a very casual atmosphere, and affordable food make Pho Huong a staple for Vietnamese eats in the Junction.
