Snag a Parking Spot on the Web

Posted by Adam Schwabe / February 5, 2008

Parking Spot
With developers endlessly gobbling up parking lots for new condo and retail developments, parking in the city can be hard to come by. Even when you do find one, life doesn't seem to get any easier.

This can be especially frustrating for those looking to rent a spot monthly, or annually, since many lots can charge ridiculous prices for these coveted patches of pavement. Thankfully, there's a new Web-two-point-oh site on the scene, ParkingSpots.com, that hopes to alleviate many of the headaches prospective renters and owners experience trying to connect with each other.

Art Attack's Snow Blitzkrieg

Posted by Adam Schwabe / January 31, 2008

Snow Storm
With anywhere from 15-30 cm of snow expected in the GTA by tomorrow morning brought on by a "Godzilla-like" storm, some are (clearly) busy making hyberbolic news headlines, while others are salivating over the thought of "commuter chaos."

Thankfully, there's a brighter side to a major winter storm striking the GTA, and the Toronto Public Spacing Committee's Art Attack crew are taking more of glass-half-full style approach to the whole ordeal. Liam O'Doherty of the TPSC sent a bulletin earlier inviting one and all to their Snow Fort Build. Read on for the details.

Porter Airlines to Fly NY

Posted by Adam Schwabe / January 8, 2008

Porter ♥ NY
In what is surely the worst kept secret in commercial aviation history, Porter Airlines appears to be on the verge of finally announcing flights to New York City direct from their airport on Toronto Island. Porter ran an ad in a number of Toronto newspapers over the weekend with a very cryptic red apple along with the headline, "Some news is just too big to hide. A new destination coming soon."

Besides that little tidbit, Porter CEO Robert DeLuce told USA Today in December that they're "looking closely" at adding flights to several US cities, including NYC (and possibly Chicago). In fact, he said he'd prefer to see flights going to and from both New York's LaGuardia airport as well as Newark. Having just added a flight direct to Mont Tremblant, Porter appears to be on the up, but can they sustain their success south of the border?

Bye Bye Bata

Posted by Adam Schwabe / December 26, 2007

Bata Demo
Thanks to reader Richard for tipping us off that Bata Shoes' former headquarters that overlooks the DVP at 59 Wynford Drive is now history and in the process of being demolished. Completed in 1965, the building has been the subject of quite a bit of debate since Bata abandoned it a number of years ago.

Originally designed by Canadian architect John B. Parkin (who was also involved in the design and construction of City Hall, the TD Centre, as well as IBM's massive Canadian facility in Don Mills), it was one of the many buildings constructed during the 60's that gave Toronto a real taste of modernism.
