Titanic musical coming to Toronto

Posted by Staff / January 16, 2014

Titanic Musical TorontoTitanic the musical is on its way to Toronto. The revival of the 1997 Tony Award winning production is set to be remounted by Thom Southerland, and will dock in Toronto at the Royal Alex from July 22 to Aug. 31 before heading to Broadway. It's good news for theatre fans who like their musicals with a side of tragedy (always the best combination for such overtly melodramatic productions), as the show has been better reviewed in its recent form than it was when it originally opened (this despite the subsequent Tony awards).

Toronto's never enjoyed a big budget version of the musical, so this production from David Mirvish with Barry and Fran Weissler is sure to draw big crowds this summer. Perhaps now, some 17 years after the release of the James Cameron film blockbuster by the same name, we've all collectively recovered enough to enjoy what is actually a compelling and dramatically rich tale.

"Oh, they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue
And they thought they had a ship that the water wouldn’t go
But the Captain blew a fart and the ship blew apart
It was sad when the great ship went down

Oh, it was sad, so sad
It was sad when the great ship went down
To the bottom of the sea
(Uncles and Aunts, little children lost their pants)
It was sad when the great ship went down."

Perfect timing, they just pulled The Titanic from Netflix! Hoepfully the score is composed by Carl.

I was (and am) proud to be a part of the Toronto premiere of Titanic: The Musical in February 2006 under the direction of Joe Cascone and the Civic Light Opera Company, performed at the Fairview Library Theatre. Click my name for the website for more info.

(The photo under my name is an old one.)

Will there be an actual ship this time or will everyone still just stare offstage and pretend?
