This Week in Comedy: Bryan Callen, Ari Shaffir, Tracy Morgan, and Steve-O
Bryan Callen, Ari Shaffir, Tracy Morgan, and... Steve-O? One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong. Follow me as I pull no punches on This Week In Comedy.
WED MAR 21 - THURS MAR 22 / BRYAN CALLEN / YUK YUK'S / 224 RICHMOND W / 8PM / $25
Love Bryan Callen. I first saw him as, 'Poolboy' on MadTV. Most recently, he's been disagreeing fundamentally with Joe on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast (which is, by the way, one of the best podcasts I've ever heard). So we know he can act, engage in stimulating conversation, tell amazing orgy stories (Google it)...but what about his stand-up? Check out his impression of Christopher Walken reincarnated as a pigeon and let me know what you think. Oh, and hats off to Jay Mohr as the father of all Christoper Walken impersonators.
THURS MAR 22 / ARI SHAFFIR / GLENN GOULD STUDIO / 250 FRONT W / 9PM / $36
Here we have another regular on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Ari Shaffir. Most people know him as, 'The Amazing Racist' but I first saw him talking to Joe Rogan about Carlos Mencia's martial art, JokeSteal-do. Warning: he's not for the faint of heart. Many people find him overly offensive, but not me. Then again, I'm the guy laughing at Tracy Morgan making fun of persons with disabilities, so perhaps my opinion is a bit skewed.
FRI MAR 23 / TRACY MORGAN / SONY CENTRE / 1 FRONT E / 8PM / $40-72
If you aren't squeamish, Tracy Morgan is one of the best stand-up comedians out there. In fact, one of my favourite stand-up performances of all-time is featured above. It's one of my faves because you could tell he was being honest, regardless of the crowd's reaction. That said, I didn't really warm up to his recent HBO special. Hopefully he'll bring back the raw Tracy that would've slept with Michael Jackson for a chance to visit Neverland.
SAT MAR 24 / CHRIS KATTAN / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 186 SPADINA / 8PM / $36
Turns out we have another of my favourite cast members from SNL in town, Chris Kattan. I'll always remember his characterization of Kippy Strug, Kerri Strug's sister (you'll recall her courageous performance at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta). But, like Steve-O, we already know he's good on camera...what about his stand-up? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a clip of him on stage. Instead, I've included a video of Jim Breuer telling a hilarious Norm MacDonald story, with Chris Kattan being the butt end of the joke (pun intended; see clip).
SAT MAR 24 / STEVE-0 / DANFORTH MUSIC HALL / 147 DANFORTH / 9PM / $60-72
That's right, Steve-O from Jackass. But stand-up? Really? In my opinion, and in the words of that horse from Ren & Stimpy, "No sir..." It's kind of like watching MIchael Jordan play baseball: you love him, and because you love him, you want him to put down that damn baseball bat and win three more championships. From what I understand, Steven engages in his tried and true self-inflicted mutilation, so there's that. But hey, I was never a fan of Jackass, and therefore I'm just not part of his target market...I'm more of a stand-up comedy kind of guy.
