PowerballGet ready for a showdown this Thursday as the Power Ball and D-List Ball square off in a head to head battle for the hearts and wallets of the local arts community.

The Power Ball, now in its tenth iteration has long been heralded as one of the must attend art-parties of the year. But for some, the party is seen as pretentious and with a $160 price tag to attend all but inaccessible to most Toronto artists.

Enter Gallery TPW who last Spring organized a competing fundraiser - the cheap and cheerful D-List Ball. While the inaugural event was a bit of a flop, they're back this year for version 2.0 with a new venue, cheaper price tag and raffle prizes!

Which fundraiser is gonna win? Hopefully, both of them. But for now I present a cheat sheet to the must know details about these events.

Haha, thats funny that 'Let's Go to War' will play at the powerball. I mean good for them, it would be fun to see the "top curators" jumping around with their music.

They'll both suck but I'll take cheap, envious artists over pretentious ones anyday.

What's pretentious? Pretentions is what people who can't go to power ball, for whatever reason (financial, personal grudge, etc), call people who go to power ball.

They are both good, toronto is good. Hipster complainorama's suck.

I'm not pretentious, just cynical and arrogant.

Have you actually been to any glitzy art events or are you just feigning ignorance?

While it's easy to suggest that the more events that happen make the city a more interesting place, I'd argue that we need more new events, not long-running traditions.

D-List Ball at least has a certain self-aware sense of humor.

$160.00 pricey ?? It's a FUNDRAISER not a day at the spa or trip to the whinery ! ! Both help sustain artists.
As an artist I occasionally go to a gala. This is my choice once a year, that I budget for and enjoy. And many times I meet future customers. It ain't no bake sale or pub night.
it's a business expence that inspires & helps me self - market.

The PB, in fact, gave out free tickets to over a 125 local artists and involved artists in 10 or so installations on site...so no one's being 'disenfranchised' please! besides, most of TPW BOD came by PB before heading off to DList. Its not a competition.
