Spacing Helps Eucan with Simple Math

Posted by Tanja / January 11, 2006

jan1106_eucan.jpgDropping by the Spacing Wire today I couldn't help but let a little jaw drop at their latest post re: the Eucan Megabins.

I'm not a fan, but apparently neither are most (surprise?).

The city survey results came in with huge opposition to the project and what does Eucan do? Sends out press releases boldly (and falsely) stating the opposite.

Classy.

Check out the full story.

i hate the bins as much as the next person but there may be a valid reason for calling the online portion of the dissenters a vocal minority: ip addresses. hopefully they were collected during online submissions. i don't recall being denied the ability to complain multiple times when i voiced my discontent with the megabins. maybe someone else remembers if they were disallowing multiple survey submissions from the same ip?

i don't want to agree with eucan. but we need more survey information. what was the unique ip count for online submissions?

Why does the City insist on selling itself to the lowest common denominator? Why does everything have to be a deal, get rid of every privately-owned box and can in the public right of way and replace it with simple garbage cans. Ban newspaper boxes from the downtown and license newspaper stands like Paris. Get rid of those info posts, who the hell thought that was a good idea (aside from marketing companies who finally found away to hawk their products in public parks.)

AND...solve the postering issue. There was a time when the City had large posts setup downtown that could be postered (I think they said "City Nights" on them.) For some reason they were removed and the posters had to go somewhere, unfortunately it was on every other piece of street furniture.

you go, clide. it's enough to make you sick. are the people who make these deals actually residents or fat-ass 905ers who don't have to suffer the results?

I don't yet have a view on this, but the article suggesting that online survey is truth and street survey is a lie needs to be challenged. I would think that those who favour these bins wouldn't really bother to line-vote, and those opposed would strongly show their opposition. Statistically, i would think the street poll is more accurate. This sounded a bit like Paul Martin creating arguments from flimsy.

This would be the natural inclination, however, let me enlighten some folks about Eucan's 'survey'.

About a week and a half ago, a nice person came into my place of business (located in a business neighbourhood which has all three types of bins). She said very simply that she was collecting signatures for a petition to keep the silver (short) bin at the main intersection (the one in question is an older silver bin - the short ones with one slot for garbage, one for papers, and one for cans/bottles). She further stated that the city was otherwise planning on removing THAT particular type of bin. That was all the information she provided me with.

On her clipboard, I could see that she had already collected a lot of names and signatures. Before signing though, I asked her if she had any paperwork regarding this issue (which is something I suspect a lot of previous signature owners did NOT do). She did have a little pamphlet which I then proceeded to read. In fact, the signatures she was collecting were for a petition SUPPORTING all three types of bins - INCLUDING the Megabins.

I did not sign and quite vocally told her why I would not support this.

On the one hand, those that signed without reading what they were supporting should probably be due what they deserve for so blindingly trusting the words of someone they have never met before.

On the other hand, I am disgusted that EUCAN (or someone believing in this project - I have no absolute proof that EUCAN is the originator of this petition) would resort to such tactics to support their project.

Note to EUCAN - I wouldn't be surprised if you faced even more criticism if this gets pushed through. We may be polite but we won't stand for such underhanded tactics.

Point taken, Keven. I guess what i was thinking was that a properly done street poll should have more accuracy than an online poll. In this case, it would be highly reasonable to assume that this "poll" was commissioned by an interested party - and by the way, there may be more than just Eucan with an ax to grind.

Eucan is a Mexican owned company that took over the contracts and agreements covering the 'old' trash bins and their advertising revenue. Profits will go to Mexico, not Toronto.

Eucan does not care about ease of use. All they want is to capture eyeballs for their advertisers. Too large a footprint on the sidewalk - tough. Slots too small to put the trash in - tough.

Remember folks, it isn't about a tidy street, it's all about advertising.

Don't like Eucan's trash bins?

Drop a note to Mayor Miller.
