David Trautrimas

About the Artist

Taking old discarded junk and creating elaborate building structures, David Trautrimas is a photographer who creates habitats from old machines.

At a quick glance, it's easy to mistake Trautrimas' recent body of work for realistic illustrations. But upon closer inspection, you realize, you are looking at a number of photographs carefully crafted together from old household items such as lamps and staplers combined with his own stock library of windows, trees and curbs to build a fantastic, futuristic scene.

His original inspiration grew from his frustration with traditional photography, where taking a photograph would result in capturing one scene. He wanted to play with more manipulation within the image by combining two elements together like in silkscreening, which evolved into creating these building structures out of old items.

Trautrimas initially went to Fanshawe College in 1998 for a multimedia course where he originally learnt about tradition photography and printing. After moving to Toronto and working in a photolab for a year, Trautrimas decided to go to OCAD where he discovered printmaking and digitally output. His work has been showcased in a variety of publications and he has also shown in several group and solo shows, most recently this past September at Le Gallery on Dundas West.
